A tourist has travelers’ checks in $20 and $100 denominations. How many $20 checks are there?

(1) If half of the $20 checks is spent, the remaining amount is $520.

(2) The total value of the checks is $740.

Let x= Number of $20 denominations
Let y= Number of $100 denominations

Statement (1):
20(x/2)+100y=520
i.e. 10x+100y=520
i.e. x+10y=52 <=== Two variable and one equation, clearly Not sufficient. (Eliminate A & D)

Statement (2):
10x+100y=740
i.e. x+10y=74 <=== Two variable and one equation, clearly Not sufficient. (Eliminate B)

Combining (1) & (2):
x+10y=52
x+10y=74

Same variable resulting in 2 different values that means values of y & x are changing(are different in different equations).
Not sufficient and hence Answer is E.

Thus, combined.
x+5y=37
x+10y=52
Thus, 5y=15 or y=3.

Therefore, x=52-30=22

Still one last thing.
I just was wondering, since 20 is divisible by 2, do we really need to multiply everything by 2.
