Hello all
Today I took the GMAT third time and again scored a 700(Q49,V35) . (previous scores include 660-> 700).
My previous quant and verbal scores were as follows in that order
660 (Q49, V 32)
700 (Q50, V35)
This is rather disheartening if I look back at my scores in GMATPrep:
GMATPrep 1: 750
GMATPrep 2: 760
GMAT Prep Exam Pack 1: 750
GMAT Prep Exam Pack 2: 720
I applied to 4 b-schools last year and had interview calls from Duke and ISB but didn't get through finally. After analysis, a lot of people told me Indian applicant pool is super competitive , so I took my GMAT score of 700 to be one of the reasons. Hence after series of rejects last year, I decided to take the GMAT again this year before applications. But I am stuck at the same score again and have no idea what to do next.
Now the important question , R1 is just around the corner (mostly starting from Sept 15th onwards) and my target schools include ISB, Duke, Haas, Yale and McCombs. Should I retake the exam? . If you ask me if I can score better , yes I can just like I though today. My practice CAT scores reflect a much better potential.
If I do, that would mean missing couple of R1 Deadlines (for ISB specially). And instead go for R2 deadlines. I do believe my score today was way below my potential. Even at m worst, I was comfortably scoring a 720 during practice CAT.
Secondly , can I instead go ahead with R1 applications and during essay writing, give GMAT once again and send updates scores to my target schools after i give my GMAT? does that work?
And lastly , two consecutive 700's , would that give any -ve indication to my target schools?
(I will complete 5 years work-ex next year and my career has revolved around delivering clean energy projects in South Asian towns/villages - projects related to development of the community through Solar/Wind. The role has been mostly business development, but I work mostly with governments, investors and entrepreneurs in India/Africa/Bangladesh/Dhaka
I started my own NGO in 2011 , went well for 1.5 years but things didn't work-out and it failed. I am also a big contributor to my Alma Mater as the head of the fundraising team-worldwide)

Your GMAT score is probably less than the average GMAT score of the Indian pool of applicants but your profile is much more colorful. Indian - IT- male is the standard profile in which the competition is very high. Look for schools where you would be a good fit - schools with clean energy related projects, faculties working in such projects etc. Get in touch with those faculties if possible and try to understand what kind of people the school is looking for.
Also, get in touch with school specific consultants to get help on your application. Mind you, after two 700s, it isn't a great idea to take GMAT again if you are not certain of getting 760+. A 660-700 would have been a better position than 660-700-700 (with 1 point lower in Quant) but a third 'around 700' would be frowned upon. It would seem that you are just trying to luck out without preparing much. This means that you will have a lot of pressure on your head the next time you take GMAT and that itself spells disaster. I am not trying to discourage you from taking GMAT. All I am saying is that probably there are other better methods of improving your candidature. A 700 is perfectly acceptable for your target schools so you might want to move on and add more value to your essays. There are many things you can do - research the schools thoroughly, get in touch with relevant people in the schools, get professional help from consultants, make your essays interesting etc.
