Hi,
I'm an engineering student in my last semester.

[For those who are Indian's here, I recently gave CAT'17 and Got 96 percentile, sectional percentile being 99-97-80 in Verbal Ability & RC - Data Interpretation - Quant respectively. I neglected quant quite a bit during my last few months of prep and it cost me big time.]

Anyway, I plan to take it again next year, but in the meantime, I want to start prep for GMAT and give it by May(at most). So I guess I have somewhat 3 months to prepare and give the exam.
I have zero specific prep for GMAT, but I feel I will do well in the basics at least since I prepared for CAT, so 3 months should be more than enough I feel.

There are 3 main questions I wanted to ash :

1. Should I enrol in a classroom program or just get the material and start the prep on my own? I'm determined enough to study on my own but I also aim to score 750+ in GMAT, so that even in the worst case scenario I score at least 700+

2. What all material should I refer to? I did get 99 percentile in VARC of CAT, but I feel that was too easy. I literally didn't even spend a day trying to learn English, just used to read for some time every day; editorials and some books. I would really like to know some good books to study from. I only know that buying and going through the OG of GMAT is a must, clueless after that...

3. Last but not the least, ik how crucial mocks and practice tests for sections are important in order to excel, which are mocks should I give ? Is there any specific Test Series that I can join ?

PS I live in New Delhi, India.
Thank you.

First, let me give you some feedback on your CAT result relevance. I am throwing some numbers around based on experience. Your case may be different.

Verbal 99 - So you are already at about V38-39 in GMAT. You will need to go through the various question types in CR and RC but you should be able to handle them relatively easily. I cannot comment on your SC skill and that will make all the difference (whether you get V38 or V44).

DI 97 - You shouldn't face any problems in the IR section of GMAT though you should figure out the question types asked. Also, though comprehension should be no problem, time management could be an issue in this section.

Quant 80 - Cannot comment on how well you will do on GMAT Quant. The two are quite different in their approach but once you understand what DS questions are all about (basically the sufficiency condition), I think you should already be at 42+

1. Should I enrol in a classroom program or just get the material and start the prep on my own? I'm determined enough to study on my own but I also aim to score 750+ in GMAT, so that even in the worst case scenario I score at least 700+

Depends on how you study. If self-study works for you, you could just get the curriculum of a test prep and work on it. If you like an instructor-led plan, you could join a full course, but here is the catch - you need more work on strategy and less on content (judging by your CAT performance). Many Indian institutes focus solely on content, relying on their CAT material to create their GMAT material. Their utility to you would be limited so consider an online classroom course.

Just OG may not be sufficient. Take one of our free tests here: https://www.gmatclub.com/forum/veritas-prep-resource-links-no-longer-available-399979.html#/free-g ... tice-test/
(Don't use an official prep test just yet)
Complete curriculum of a test prep company would be beneficial since you are shooting for 750.
Check out our free trial class, one of our video lessons (SC) and download our DS book from here: https://www.gmatclub.com/forum/veritas-prep-resource-links-no-longer-available-399979.html#-prep/
These resources will give you a good idea of what more is required (classes/curriculum/practice tests)

Hi, thankyou so much for your advice.
I gave my first GMATprep Exam today, one of the 2 free one's available.
I haven't studied quant or verbal for past 4 months or so, so felt kinda out of touch.
I scored 640 in it, Quant : 49 Verbal : 28.

Quant seemed very easy, and I'm sure with little effort I can get 50+.
I'm worried about my Verbal though, I want to score close to 750 in my GMAT if not more, and I have 2-3 months on my hand with alot of free time.
I'm willing to dedicate all my time to this GMAT prep.
1. Do you think it's possible for me to get around 750 in 2-3 months?
2. If you can suggest some books for mastering Verbal, please do. I'm ready to spend upto 3-4 hours on verbal everyday.
Also I feel OG for quant would be too basic for me so incase there is some book with touches some advance techniques and questions for quant, please refer them to me too.

Just one friendly suggestion. If you are fresher then have at least 2-3 years of experience before M.B.A. Experience before M.B.A. will help you to learn more from your M.B.A. course.
