Hi all,
Gave my test on 6th July 2020 and scored a 680. Can someone please analyse my ESR and provide some comments? Details below:
1. How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week? Since Feb 2020 about 10-15 hrs per week. Mainly quant focussed and over-estimated how much work I'd need on verbal. May-June, which were scheduled to be Verbal-heavy months, saw a major project kick off at work which basically derailed my prep until about 10 days before my test.
2. What study materials have you used so far? Q - TTP - finished about 80% & left out Probability, Geometry, Coordinate geometry & Functions & Series - I can see from the ESR that were my weak points.
V - RC -
MGMAT guide, CR - nothing, SC -
MGMAT SC guide + GMATNinja video marathons a week before my test. Practised about 60% of OG verbal questions with a rather below-average accuracy and would say I was only about 60% ready for verbal. I got good at SC towards the end but CR was still my big pain point. I must admit that I was feeling a bit under-prepared for verbal and if I'm being honest, I would admit that I got a bit lucky on the exam for Verbal.
3. On what dates did you take your CATs/mocks and how did you score (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for each)? Took 2 mocks -
Mock 1 - 560 (Q49, V18) - T-20 days before test day; freaked out & completely screwed up Verbal
Mock 2 - 640 (Q48, V31) - T-5 days before test day; put in a huge amount of work in verbal in the last 20 days leading up to the test which may have helped a tad bit but not too much. After this test, I continued to drill verbal and did a lot of OG practice.
4. Test day expereinceI was calm and well-rested. Test order was Q-V-IR-AWA and I didn't feel too jittery in quant. The questions seemed to get progressively hard and I was struggling for time towards the second half as I got too many challenging Geomerty, Coordinate Geometry & Combinatorics questions. For Verbal, being focussed helped me get some answers very quickly and I guessed about 5-8 questions and saw many RC questions (4 passages). Didn't really know what to expect for my final score..
5. What is your overall goal score? Next test? Targeting 750 for M7 - Q50, V41+ which I can see is a bit lofty at this stage. I'm not really a "smart guy" as such but I am willing to put copious amounts of work to achieve the level of competence I need to hit to reach my goal score and I believe I can.
This was a full test so I was going to give the GMAT online atleast one chance (around August 10th) before the online only option runs out around mid-August and the second attempt at the full test around late August/Early Sept.
6. When are you planning to apply to Business School? What Schools? Was actually planning to apply in R1 which is why I gave the test even though I was under-prepared as I needed to know if I even have a shot at applying in R1 or am I better off applying in R2. Still feel like I could push a bit hard, (hopefully) get a good score & squeeze atleast 1-2 applications for M7 in R1 but would likely have to push em all to R2. Looking at M7 schools only.
