Hey Jon,

Thanks for the response!

I apologize in advance for another long post, but I hope at least it's interest and different from the other posts!

In regards to your question of why I want to quit my job to teach English in Europe:

1. I want to quit my job because I'm not interested in the functional expertise my firm specializes in - My firm focuses on Procurement consulting. Similar to AT Kearney, Accenture's Procurement practice, etc. Impact is high, yes, we save our clients lots of money and establish better process for them moving forward, all that good stuff. However, procurement as a functional practice and saving large organizations money really is just not my passion. I can not picture myself doing this kind of pure cost-cutting engagement for the next 3 years (if I were to apply fall 2016).

2. I want to move to Europe now and teach English because - I've been in New York for 7 years now, and as someone who is global-minded and seeks a unique life experience and business experience in Europe, I want to follow the path that I know will give me such experiences. Staying at my nice cushy consulting job for the next three years is comfortable, but boring and predictable. Three years of my 20's is high cost. I am certain if I moved to Europe to teach English and try to get into the start-up scene, I will face significant challenges and I will be living life more on the edge, giving me different perspectives and insights about life in general.

Now, specifically why teaching English?
1. Easy visa - As an American citizen I can't really think of another way to get myself to Europe now legally. So yes, it's a Visa issue. I could look for a business job in Europe, but I've looked into it a bit but it seems quite difficult with the whole sponsorship issue.
2. Presentation skill development, learning to command presence in a room, and in-person close interactions with that society
3. Flexibility - Not to mention, most teaching jobs are about 20 hours a week, which gives me enough time to get involved with start-up's.

It seems by your response that you think for my mba admission profile that it would be OK, not particularly advantageous or disadvantageous, if I were to drop my consulting job in mid-late 2015 and teach english/get involved with a start-up? Could you please elaborate a bit more on that? How much do schools value a candidate that identifies his goals in life and actively pursues them? On the other hand, does the loss of 2 years of American consulting experience significantly offsets that?

Thanks again!!

Hey, got your idea then.
It's not sooo hard for Americans to get Visas, if you can get sponsored, but it's true that from abroad it can make things tougher.

And if you want to go to Europe and teach English because it would be fun and wild and adventurous, just do it. Don't let anyone else tell you otherwise.

Buuuut if you're only doing that to be able to get "in" to Europe, I have a couple of alternative ideas for you. Cause from an MBA perspective, I'm not sure how great that looks:
1. Apply NOW for a Euro MBA - Okay, you are young... but just go for it. I mean, you can apply now for HEC, or for INSEAD January for example (Gotta take that GMAT though). That way you go to Europe, have fun, but also keep things on track
2. Go as a student (a different Masters program... in whatever.. there are programs (expensive) in English, of if you speak a foreign language, you can apply to a regular Masters (and pay nothing)). This is the other easy way in.

What do you think?

And if you need help with this stuff, I have juuust the guy for you... one of our consultants, Yaron, has lived in several European countries for almost a decade and he knows his way around...

Best,
Jon

Hey Jon,

Thanks a ton for your input and perspective. Sorry for the delay in reply. After a week of thinking this through, I have decided to just apply for MBA for Jan 2016 or Sept 2016 intake. I'll also look at a few American schools such as the NYU/HEC dual degree program or the Wharton Lauder program.

Thanks again for your answer!
