Hi Jon,
Hope you're doing well. Not sure if you remember me, but you reviewed my question on whether I should move to Europe to teach English earlier this year. We last left off that I should apply for a Jan 2016 start at an European program. Thanks again for your advice.
Well, things changed significantly for me just a week after. I got an opportunity to move to Shanghai for work, and have been out here for about 3 months now. Career wise, this has been an amazing leap for me. I'm the Greater China lead of a global consulting engagement (over 30 consultants and 50+ client team members) for a major F500 company. I manage five multi-national consultants under me (who are actually all older than me), and I'm essentially the face of my firm to our client here.
Just to refresh your memory first .... my stats are:
NYU '12, Economics major, 3.35 GPA
GMAT yet taken, but aiming for 700-750 (got a 2140 on my SAT's so figured that is a good range to aim). Got 690 on first mock with no practice and now in kill mode with Empowergmat...I feel good about this.
3 years at a boutique supply chain/cost-reduction consulting firm. Now is Greater China lead of global engagement.
Native fluency in English and Mandarin Chinese
Current Age: 25
Background/personal story
My focus is on international and global experience. Born in Taiwan, I moved to the East Coast when I was in elementary school. Always traveled back and forth due to family so I grew up with a very international-oriented focus. I attended NYU and studied abroad in Shanghai and Tokyo. I had a Marketing internship at a global fruits company while in Shanghai and also wrote an Economics paper on Chinese domestic consumption oversaw by a McKinsey consultant. In Tokyo, I had a internship with a consumer insights boutique that wrote reports for Western companies about the Chinese market. In addition, I've also had a CPG Marketing internship in Taipei.
For the past 3 years, I've worked very closely with high level stakeholders of 5 well known American companies, and was promoted to Senior Consultant earlier this year.
Post B-School Goals: MBB in Europe
Long Term Goal:
My goals have become more defined now. My long term goal is to empower Taiwanese to aim for higher economic value activities and global aspirations. My experiences growing up in America, traveling, and being exposed to world-class talent living in New York has led me to realize that Taiwan, despite its high human capital, is impeded by its historical status of a small country with no clearly defined political future. This especially stayed in my mind when I was involved in a negotiation project with a Taiwanese supplier, and my client and I were able to make unreasonable demands with zero resistance from the Taiwanese supplier. Taiwanese succeed in the 70's to 90's by becoming nimble and bending over back to companies from the US, Japan, and Europe. Taiwan now needs something that Samsung and LG is giving Korea. Taiwanese companies now need to play the business game as an equal of the US, Japan, China, and Europe. I want to lead that change by starting my own consulting company in Taiwan focused on international expansion, market entry, and becoming a business leader who can provide strategy leadership for Taiwanese companies, like Roland Berger in Germany or Michael Porter in the US.
Because of my global goal, I want to not just have a deep understand of the US and Asia. I need to understand Europe as well. A European MBA will give me:
1. Formal degree that opens the European and global business door
2. European networks
3. Formal education on business from a European context
Now my questions are:
What do you think my chances are for LBS and INSEAD? I feel my application will be stronger at end of the year than compared to end of September (1st round LBS) due to:
1. 2nd chance for gmat if needed
2. I have lined up the oportunity to be a volunteer NYU career mentor for NYU Shanghai (a real degree giving school now), but this won't really start until the fall
3. longer tenure at my project (will be 9 months by EOD vs. 6 months at Sept)
4. I think I have a strong shot to be promoted to Manager at EOY
Do you think I should wait to apply Round 2 ( January) for LBS? Or do you think I'm strong enough for round 1 that the above four points wouldn't make a difference?
For INSEAD, would you recommend applying for the Dec 2016 admit? So that would push back the application timeline to spring of next year. Or again, do you think my application is strong enough now?
Lastly, my heart wants to be in Europe. At the same time, I really want to work for a top strategy consulting firm. I don't think any other school in Europe is good enough to get me there, so I think I should apply to a ~3 schools in the US that have more of a international focus. Given these two goals, what do you think are the best B schools in the US for me? This is what I've gathered from some search:
Wharton: great for consulting and international business but not sure if I'm competitive enough. Perhaps I would actually be more competitive for their Lauder program? I also am not a fan of Philly at all.
Booth: seems to have a great international focus with all the dual degree options. MBB placement is quite high but clearly has the reputation of a finance school. Also not sure if I want to be in Chicago for 2 years.
Kellogg: top for consulting but seems like zero international focus. Also not sure if I'm competitive here due to my low GPA. Also not sure if I want to be in Chicago for 2 years.
Columbia: good for international but not consulting
Tuck: good for consulting but not sure if right environment for me in Hanover
HBS: do I even have a chance here?
Please let me know your thoughts...thank you SO much.
