Hi Jon,
I plan to hire an admissions consultant when I apply to business school. I wanted to get your initial impression on areas to improve and if my target schools are within reach.
White male - 25 years old - I plan to apply to business school when I am 28 and to matriculate when I am 29.
GMAT: 700 twice - 1st time (49Q, 37V, 7 IR, 6 AWA) 2nd time (47Q, 40V, 5 IR, 6 AWA). I do feel as though I under performed on both tests, as I was routinely scoring between 740-760 during my practice tests - Veritas and GMAC - while trying to simulate the environment (no extra breaks, no extra time, and full tests). I plan on retaking the GMAT again.
After business school, I want to stay in consulting, but I want to focus mostly on corporate strategy development and profit enhancement. I think I want to consult for the consumer products industry, but I have not had enough experience in that industry to know for sure. My dream job is MBB.
EducationDegree: B.A. in Business and Economics (double major) from small private liberal arts school in the south (Southwestern University).
GPA:3.266/4.0 - Although my GPA is not as high as I would like it to be, I did have a 3.6 over my last 4 semesters, including 2 dean's lists during that time.
Activities at school: multiple leadership positions in my fraternity, leadership position in the school's Financial Analyst Program, economics club member.
Work Experience1.5 years in consulting at a major, but not Big 4, international accounting firm. I work mostly on performance improvement projects.
-Highly praised employee. The performance improvement area of our company is the hardest area to be staffed in. I am about to be promoted to Experienced Associate, and I have the potential to be promoted to Senior Associate at the end of this year.
I plan on working in consulting until I apply for business school. I should have about 5 years of experience at matriculation (maybe 4 if I decide to apply a year earlier than what I am planning currently). I might try to get on with a consulting firm that will pay for my MBA.
Extra Curricular ActivitiesI am passionate about education and about helping those who are underprivileged. I think I would extremely enjoy education consulting at my job, but I think staying in the performance improvement area is better for my career. Because of that, I try to volunteer when I can, though it can be hard to volunteer due to travelling for work.
-Literacy tutor for underprivileged children who are behind in their reading level. 1 hour per week for the 2014-2015 school year. I plan to volunteer again for the 2015-2016 school year.
-Led a group of 4 other employees from my work - including Partners and Directors - at a volunteering event to help pack food for malnourished children in 3rd world countries. We packed over 1,300 meals. I will be leading this event again this year, and there should be more employees who attend.
-I was an economics tutor during the summer after graduating college. I tutored 2 different students - one in macroeconomics and one in microeconomics.
I am very big into music
-I sing, and I have auditioned for American Idol, America's Got Talent, X-Factor, and The Voice, all multiple times.
-I play the guitar and piano.
I also like to stay active
-I have been a competitive bowler since I was about 14 years old, though I bowl much less now due to work. I have multiple sanctioned 300 games and one 800 series (which is considered more prestigious in the bowling community). I averaged about 220 in league before I moved for my job. I bowl the Texas State tournament every year and the National tournament every year (though I wasn't able to make it this year due to work).
-I am a huge hockey buff, and I play in local ice hockey pickup games during the week (when I am not travelling for work).
-I play disc golf quite a bit, and I play in local tournaments when I get the time.
Top Target SchoolsColumbia - I love New York and really want to live and work there. I have already attended an admissions event on campus, and I will be attending another admissions event when CBS visits, in the upcoming weeks, the city that I live in.
Tuck - I will be attending an admissions event when Tuck visits, in the upcoming weeks, the city that I live in.
KelloggBoothSloan - I will be attending an admissions event when Sloan visits, in the upcoming weeks, the city that I live in.
Yale SOM - If I decide I want to go into education consulting. I will be attending an admissions event when Yale visits, in the upcoming weeks, the city that I live in.
Backup SchoolsJohnson - this school is probably most in line with my current profile stats.
McCombs - I was born and raised right outside of Austin, and I might want to move back to the area.
McDonough I want to develop the quantitative side of my abilities, and thus I am gearing towards schools that are quant heavy and have great placement into consulting.
That is all I can think of. I know that my target schools are a bit of a stretch, but I think they are definitely possible, especially if I can increase my GMAT to a 720+.
Thanks in advance for your help.
