Georgetown(McDonough) vs UTD $$ 22 Mar 2015, 04:30

Hey guys,

I have offers from UTD with money covering around 50% of the total cost of attendance and McDonough without a single coin. Now the UsNews ranking is that UTD 33 and McDonough 24 I think.
I am on my way to be a career/industry switcher with 7 years IT experience(Project mgr and Account mgr without coding background) plus 2 years running my very small business in consumer textile products.

My ultimate goal after mba is a mkt/business development/general management position in the consumer product industry because obviously usually no founder would need a mba degree(at least in the early stage), no offense to anyone, founder or professional worker. BTW, I make a net profit of around $50,000 annually.

I know neither school has a strong presence in consumer products, McDonough more of financial and UTD kind of IT. And location is not a preference.

It puts me in a dilemma and I am not sure if the brand name of McDonough is that strong to be worthy $170,000. This is some really serious money.

Please help me decide.

US News ranking past top 20 is very noisy. The opportunities available at Georgetown is much greater than UTD's. The average starting post-MBA salary is ~$30K higher, and probably with greater upward potential. I usually don't advise turning down full tuition, but these two schools are not as close as US News may put them out to be.

I think I understand what you talk about. The ranking is not everything. There are other things like history, network, resources etc.
It's just that the money got me confused and blinded.

I'm also in a pretty similar situation with a full ride to UTD and Rice with no money. I dont know georgetown as well but its ranking is similar to Rice and I'm sure is also a strong regional school. Rice tuition is expensive too at $110k. I guess whether you'd have to move and cost of living could be additional factors as well. In favor of Georgetown I'd say that I do know the school usually ranks top 25, but I probably wouldn't know UTD if i wasn't from Dallas. Whether or not that matters to companies and recruiters for your industry is something that I don't know.

UTD career staff have treated me very well, though as with many schools I think it's up to you to find that first job. It's a hard choice, best of luck!
