Help! I am lucky to be deciding between Kellogg with $100k scholarship, Tuck with $100k scholarship or Wharton with no scholarship. Looking to career switch into consulting from marketing/advertising and aiming for MBB. I would like to be placed in Boston or NYC.
I know that Wharton's brand name carries more weight, but wondering if it is enough to pay $100k extra for? I also liked the culture at Kellogg a lot but am not sure if it is wise to go to Chicago area and then try to get back to the east coast.
Any thoughts are appreciated!
Kellogg surely is great for MBB recruitment, except you'll be looking at Chicago.
Wharton definitely currently carries a huge brand recognition all over the states. But to answer your questions, I can guide you to look at the career brochure of these institutions, and look where the alumni get placed the most because that is one factor that can make a huge difference given that you want to be in a specific region.
Obviously, I would pick Kellogg over Tuck for two obvious reasons, 1. Location (Tuck is in a really small town- idk what the tight knit community will do once you are placed but if that is something you are looking for, Tuck is a better option)
2. Kellogg's statistics and placement record.
That said, as I recommend all my clients, try to make a 12 year account check. By that I mean that you need to speak to the alumni and see what is the average increase in their salary every two years and try to see what yours would be in 12 years. In that time frame, find out what will the money be in your savings account (cheap but it all boils down to money and happiness, the latter is not found in jobs- its a trend)
The salary at M7 in MBBs is nearly the same so, you can consider that constant.
For me, a $100k is a big deal, as it will reduce the burden of loan repayment and perhaps you can be debt-less in 2 years, (one if you work it out). Plus Kellogg has a great Brand image, is in the top 5 currently (beating Harvard!!, that proves my point on how useless rankings are).
But since you are location specific, research on where the alums are. Kellogg is great for Chicago MBB recruitment but that doesn't imply that alums are not there in NYC.
I hope this detailed answer does help you a little at least
