I got admitted from both Insead and HEC for Fall intake. However Insead asked me to start in a campus which is not my preference and also offered me to start in January next year in my preferred campus. HEC admitted me with nice scholarships and starting this fall.

I currently left my job already and I am in consulting but trying to get into MBB after MBA. Is HEC good with consulting recruiting? If I picked Insead which also means I’ll have to spend 6 months doing nothing this year (not bad nice to have some rest and travel around). What would be your thoughts?

Hi fnwang congrats on the admits!
INSEAD alum here. I have also sent MBA applicants to HEC. Speaking with context from my applicants, HEC just doesn't have the same kind of opportunities for consulting that you will get at INSEAD. Obviously, what you make of those opportunities depends a lot on you.

Thinking of doing nothing for 6 months this year? Well think again my friend. A lot of tier 2 consultants (even sponsored ones) try to break into MBB at INSEAD and despite having tremendous consulting experience, many are not able to do so. I have observed a certain prejudice at MBB for not easily hiring candidates from tier 2 consulting firms on campus. So you should really focus on further taking up some high impact projects or internships to play up your profile in front of MBB. Because once you are at INSEAD there will simply not be enough time for that.

Regarding the campus allocation, if you do fine academically in the early periods you can easily switch the campus later.
:)

Best wishes

Hey! Just to be clear, INSEAD and LBS students are the ones who are most preferred for MBBs across Western Europe. I feel that you have better chances of breaking into MBB with INSEAD brand even later in life.

hey, congrats on admit.

I might be too late, but HEC will provide you equal opportunity to MBB if you're french national and you wanto go into MBB in France.

You might also want to consider other opportunities after consulting, which INSEAD alum network will provide much better.

fnwang I know I'm a bit late in responding to this message, but just in case it can still be helpful to folks on the platform, here are my thoughts.

I believe that MBB's inclination to hire consulting newcomers from a variety of industries is driven by the notion that these newcomers can bring a unique and innovative perspective to consulting methods. After all, MBB firms market the qualifications of their consultants as a key selling point to their clients, and a broad range of experience increases their appeal. You can compare that to how a Tier 2 career consultant or a Big 4 consultant moving to MBB compares on paper to someone with rich experience in O&G giants moving to MBB.

To make better use of the time before joining or to distinguish yourself in the competitive MBB recruitment process, consider taking on a project that adds a fresh dimension to your portfolio. This endeavor should ideally push you beyond your comfort zone, perhaps even outside your familiar geographical region, while working on a socially impactful initiative. Alternatively, interning with industry-focused multinational giants or high growth startups can demonstrate your commitment to learning and experiencing the rigors of executing plans to achieve tangible and substantial results.
