Ross ($$$) vs Indian School of Business (no $)
Hello,
I am pleased to announce that over the past 2 days, I have secured admits from Michigan Ross (100K scholarship) and Indian School of Business (ISB) - Hyderabad campus. I had an admit from UVA Darden with small scholarship and Oxford Said from earlier rounds which pushed me to apply in R2 and R3. I am awaiting results from Yale, Booth and Tuck.
While I was all set and happy about Ross, the ISB admit feels more comfortable. I plan to return to India post-MBA (for personal reasons that include my aging parents, my gf being here who can't move to the US, and my overall negative sentiment about settling there due to poor feedback by close seniors).
I come from a management consulting background (from world's largest Japanese consulting firm). Other aspects include:
- Indian Institute of Bombay Graduate of 2022, Chemical Engineering, 7.74 /10 GPA
- ~4 years of front-end management consulting experience at Nomura Research Institute
- Currently a pre-MBA internship at a climate-tech startup
- Strong extracurriculars, deep work on global carbon markets
- GRE 331 (170Q)
Q1. Given the current global environment and my goals, would request your thoughts. 100K at Ross makes it financially very palatable, but if I don't work outside/work for 1 year, would that hold candle to the strong presence ISB has in India? Would Ross MBA be seen as Tier 2?
Q2. I always wanted to live outside of India for sometime and explore, but given comfort and opportunities in India, especially through ISB which gives proper structure and network, I feel stuck. Wanted perspectives from ISB alums on this as grass feels greener from the outside.
Q3. The whole global exploration feels more like a dream that would distrupt a lot of things in my life. Do you think I am thinking too much and being too risk averse, as isn't this the age to take risks? Has anyone managed a LDR during the two years of MBA? Is 90L-1Cr (amount I'll have to spend out of pocket/loan) too much and can't be earned and repayed from India?
Please do let me know whatever inputs/thoughts you have. I have to make a decision by 18th March

Hi. Congratulations on your admits.
If you’re planning to come back to India and not build your career in the US, it is little reason to leave. There are many downsides - you’ll be leaving your network and not only not growing it but forsaking it because business school is going to make you very busy.
Second the stress of distance relationship will likely result in you breaking up or at least the chances are much higher than you will.
Getting an internship in the US and then recruiting in India afterwards remotely is not optimal to say the least. I don’t think many career services have connections to India at Ross. While I S.B. significantly helps you with placements and has on campus recruiting pipeline.
Finally, US is indeed a more rewarding location with greater opportunities and more exciting... but it comes with higher risk and trade-offs.
So I don’t see a lot of reasons to spend two years in the US only to come back whether at Ross or booth. It may be less glamorous to stay in the same country and not go to the US and not experience in new culture but based on the cards that you were dealt and it’s very sweet of you to think about your parents, many NBA graduates don’t realize the demands their age will put on them, it makes sense for you to stay local in my humble opinion.
PS. If you look at the chief executives of many companies, you’ll see that most of them did not go to Harvard, booth, or Ross, they just worked really hard and we’re good at what they were doing. So any trade-off that you’re making now, you should know that you’re good enough to be at Ross and maybe even at booth, and you’re no worse than any of those students and equally capable.

Until and unless you're getting a full ride + a stipend at any of the US schools you applied to, it won't make sense from a financial perspective to leave India just to come back right away post matriculation. Big firms in India already have established talent pipelines from the likes of IIMs / ISB; it isn't impossible, if you have a strong network here in large corporates or the career services helps you find some connection here you may be able to land that 60LPA+ job, but again it will take a longer time period to payback that loan than if you had worked in the US.
Other option in India is startups / new age companies, that would value your M7 / T-15 degree, which are limited and would need some real hardwork and luck to find such a role and even there some might expect an year worth of post-MBA work-ex.
With all the ifs and buts above, it will be less stressful for you at ISB.
