4(2-x)<=5x+8
what is x

a) 9
b) 0
c)<=9
d) >=0
e)<=0

\(4(2-x)<=5x+8\)

\(8 - 4x <= 5x + 8\)

\(8 - 8 <= 5x + 4x\)

\(0 <= 9x\)

or \(9x >= 0\)

Therefore; \(x >= 0\)

You don't know how to do basic algebra and you don't know basics about 0.
I had forgotten them (if I ever did learn them) and started right from the start to improve GMAT. I mean right from the start. I looked at Kindergarten maths on through to high school (and not yet finished) to make sure I didn't miss something basic.

8-9x≤8
-9x≤0
-x≤0
x≥0

Shashim,

I totally understand your answer;however could you please tell me what's wrong with the following approach..

4(2-x)≤5x+8
Expand the brackets
8-4x≤5x+8
Subtract 5x from both sides
8-9x≤8
Subtract 8 from both sides
-9x≤0
Divide both sides by -9
x≤0

8-4x≤5x+8

Answer E

Hi Jaytan1,

Note this Property : Whenever you multiply or divide an inequality by a negative number, you must flip the inequality sign.

Therefore when you divide both sides with \(-9\), you will need to flip the inequality sign.

Hence the sign will change in the highlighted portion .

\(x >= 0\)

Answer D

Hope its clear now. :)

You are making mistake in last step,
i.e. Dividing both sides by -9

Because division by negative number reverses the inequality sign
Therefore -9x≤0
Divide both sides by -9, will give

\(x >= 0\)
