This is a general type of question.
Tone: The tone of the passage can be best described as .

The author begins by criticizing how these publication distort the facts, followed by a number of reasons why these publications are not well substantiated. Finally, at the end of the first parragraph the authors tone towards the passage comes into a clearing. By saying "I contend such journalism alone is of little true value...meaningful detriment to investors decisions", the author expresses disapproval towards these journalists and publications.

From 2nd to 4th line, the author is presenting a contrast by putting a keyword "however" .
As we proceed,we find that the author is disapproving various facts related to the publishing of business articles.There was no:-
indifference
hesitance
neutral
amusement
but,
disapproval in the author's tone.

second para begins with "one argument against my contention.." author is proving a support against his case. So, i chose hesitance, even though he disapproves, i though since he is trying to justify, may be he is hesitating :(

am i wrong in this thought process?

Do not try assuming what the author might feel towards the these publication. Simply work with the information given. The author is being pretty straight forward when stating his/her position.

The correct answer to this question is (E). This is a universal question about the author's attitude in the passage, requiring the test taker to successfully identify STOP in order to efficiently and accurately locate the correct answer. The author's attitude is clearly revealed by the tone of the passage. Note the strong wording in several places in the passage, including but not limited to: distort the facts,exceptionally limited,contend, and meaningful detriment.
