C is the correct option as it is parallel.

C) To cope with the 50 percent price plunge, companies laid off thousands of workers, focused their rigs on the biggest gushers only and used cutting-edge technology to squeeze all the oil they could out of every well.

A) To cope with the 50 percent price plunge, companies laid off thousands of workers, focusing their rigs on the biggest gushers only and using cutting-edge technology to squeeze all the oil they could out of every well. --- focusing and using cutting –edge are not part of the lay -off.

B) Coping with the 50 percent price plunge and laying off thousands of workers, focused their rigs on the biggest gushers only, companies used cutting-edge technology to squeeze all the oil they could out of every well. ----The lay -off is one of the core actions to cope with and cannot be put in as a participle modifier.

C) To cope with the 50 percent price plunge, companies laid off thousands of workers, focused their rigs on the biggest gushers only and used cutting-edge technology to squeeze all the oil they could out of every well. --- enlists all the three measures in three separate verbs such as laid off, focused and used; correct

D) In order to cope with the 50 percent price plunge and lay off thousands of workers, companies focused their rigs on the biggest gushers only and used cutting-edge technology to squeeze all the oil they could out of every well. – To lay - off is not the intent to be put in an infinitive form.

E) In order to cope with the 50 percent price plunge and lay off thousands of workers, companies focused their rigs on the biggest gushers only and used cutting-edge technology to squeeze all the oil the companies could out of every well. ----Same error as in D.

Hi Daagh,

Though I believe no other option makes sense apart from option C, the parallel list needs "and" as a connector before the last verb "used". Please elucidate why even without the use of conjunction you consider this option to be correct.

Thanks,
Parikshit

I went for A and I am not totally convinced with the correct answer choice C.
For C to be the right answer, it needs "," in between "only" and "used". The correct usage form of listing verbs is "A, B, and C".

Can someone help me to understand?
