I just spoke to Wharton admissions this morning for the same thing. They said to put a 0 for the AWA score and then in the 250-word optional essay mention that you plan to send them the official scores when GMAC sends then to you.

I considered doing that but decided against it. My last AWA was 5.5, so I wanted to show that off, but here's why I didn't:
(1) I think they don't really care about AWA, and
(2) I didn't want to seem like I was reporting a false score

The second point was really important to me. I think it can be explained innocently -- after all, you really did legitimately score that, just maybe not on this test (it's still unknown). But ultimately, what if you did worse on AWA this time around? I think that would end up looking much worse than reporting a 0 (which they know isn't actually a 0) and just letting the AWA score speak for itself when it arrives.

Just my $0.02, but I recommend against.

My app and all recs were confirmed received today. What a relief to have that over with!

AWA is less important than the official GMAT score and many other applicants will be in your position so it seems like you all did the right thing. Unofficial GMAT scores are fine for submission, official once admitted. Good Luck!
