A technology company tracked five types of alerts that may appear on devices after a firmware update. The graph shows the percentage chance that a device will display each alert on each of the 10 days following the update. For any alert, the line ends after the last day on which the chance of that alert is at least 1%.
Select the options from the drop-down menus that create the statement most strongly supported by the information provided.
The earliest day on which fewer than three of the five alerts each have at least a 1% chance of appearing is day , and on that day the minimum possible probability that a device displays at least one of those alerts is approximately .

The earliest day on which fewer than three of the five alerts each have at least a 1% chance of appearing is day , and on that day the minimum possible probability that a device displays at least one of those alerts is approximately .
Official Solution:
The graph gives the probability of each alert separately on each day after the firmware update. When a line ends, the probability of that alert on every later day is less than 1%. Thus, to determine how many alerts each have at least a 1% chance of appearing on a particular day, we simply count the lines that are still shown on that day.
Drop-down 1:
On day 8, four lines are still shown: battery warning, sync error, bluetooth drop, and restart prompt. Thus, four alerts still each have at least a 1% chance of appearing.
On day 9, only two lines remain: battery warning and sync error. Therefore, day 9 is the earliest day on which fewer than three of the five alerts each have at least a 1% chance of appearing.
Thus, the correct selection is 9.
Drop-down 2:
On day 9, the two alerts whose probabilities are at least 1% are battery warning and sync error.
From the graph, their probabilities are approximately:
Battery warning: 15% Sync error: 7%
The question asks for the minimum possible probability that a device displays at least one of these two alerts.
We do not know how much the two groups of devices overlap. To make the probability of at least one alert as small as possible, the overlap should be as large as possible. It is possible that every device displaying a sync error is also displaying a battery warning.
In that case, the devices with a sync error are entirely contained within the 15% that have a battery warning. Therefore, the probability that a device displays at least one of the two alerts is approximately 15%.
It cannot be less than 15%, because the probability of a battery warning alone is already approximately 15%.
