The graph is a bar graph with five bars, each representing the average number of hourly calls received by a medical clinic from its patients. The clinic answers calls during the weekdays, from Monday through Friday. The total number of calls was recorded and an average determined for each day based on calls received over a 1-year period.

The Graph inputs can be summarized as under :-

Day Hourly Calls (Average)

Monday --> 11.5
Tuesday --> 8.5
Monday --> 5.75
Monday --> 8.5
Monday --> 7.25

Select the best answer to fill in the blanks for each of the statements below, based on the data shown in the graph.

I. The number of calls received on Wednesdays is closest to ______% of the number of calls received on Mondays.

A. 6
B. 12
C. 50
D. 60
E. 200

Average Calls (Wednesday) / Average Calls (Monday) = 5.75 / 11.5
= 0.5
= 50%

(C) is the CORRECT answer

II. The relationship between number of calls received and time since the beginning of the week is best described as __________.

A. not meaningful
B. negative
C. positive

No clear pattern (whether increasing / decreasing) over the week is deduced from the Graph

Not Meaningful

(A) is the CORRECT answer

III. Based on the information shown in the graph, if the clinic wishes to reduce the cost of maintaining its office staff while minimizing disruptions in service to its patients, it should cut down on the number of staff assigned to answer phone calls on __________.

A. Mondays
B. Tuesdays
C. Wednesdays
D. Thursdays
E. Fridays

Since the average number of calls (on Wednesdays) is the minimum, the clinic should cut the number of staff on Wednesdays

Wednesdays

(C) is the CORRECT answer

(C), (A) and (C) are the CORRECT answers to Questions (I), (II) and (III)

The number of calls received on Wednesdays ~ 6
The number of calls received on Mondays ~ 12
A. 6
B. 12

C. 50

E. 200

II. The relationship between number of calls received and time since the beginning of the week is best described as not meaningful.
We have the highest average call on monday and least average call on wednesday, Data in Thursday and Friday first increase and than decrease so not any meaningful information can be determined.
A. not meaningful
B. negative
C. positive

III. Based on the information shown in the graph, if the clinic wishes to reduce the cost of maintaining its office staff while minimizing disruptions in service to its patients, it should cut down on the number of staff assigned to answer phone calls on Wednesday.
Since Wednesday received the least average number of patient calls, so the staff assigned to answer phone calls on Wednesday can be reduced.
A. Mondays
B. Tuesdays

C. Wednesdays
D. Thursdays
E. Fridays

I. The number of calls received on Wednesdays is closest to ______% of the number of calls received on Mondays.

A. 6
B. 12
C. 50
D. 60
E. 200

Solution:
Wednesday being approx 6 is half of Monday which is 12. So 50%

II. The relationship between number of calls received and time since the beginning of the week is best described as __________.

A. not meaningful
B. negative
C. positive

Solution:
Since there is no clear correlation between the number of calls and time since beginning of week, we say it is 'not meaningful'

III. Based on the information shown in the graph, if the clinic wishes to reduce the cost of maintaining its office staff while minimizing disruptions in service to its patients, it should cut down on the number of staff assigned to answer phone calls on __________.

A. Mondays
B. Tuesdays

D. Thursdays
E. Fridays

Solution:

Official Explanation

The answer to the first question is C. About 12 calls an hour are received on Mondays and about 6 calls an hour on Wednesdays, so about 50% as many calls are received on Wednesdays as on Mondays.

The answer to the second question is A. On average, there is a decrease in the number of calls received over the course of the week, so the relationship between number of calls received and time since the beginning of the week is best described as not meaningful.

The fewest calls are received on Wednesdays, so that would be the best day for the clinic to assign fewer staff members to answering the phone. Answer to the III question is C.

Hi Sajjad1994
I had a query on Question 2. The OE says, "On average, there is a decrease in the number of calls received over the course of the week, so the relationship between number of calls received and time since the beginning of the week is best described as not meaningful."
If there is a decrease in the number of calls received over the week, isn't the relationship negative. Why are we saying that it is not meaningful?

In most of the scatter point charts given in the Integrated Reasoning question, the average trend is taken and accordingly the relationship is defined.
Is it different in case of a bar chart, do we have to consider individual data points instead of taking an average.
Can you please help me in identifying what I am missing.
Thanks in advance.
Regards

For the time being, forget the OE.

On Monday: approx 12 calls
Tuesday: approx 8 calls
Wednesday: approx 6 calls
Thursday: approx 8 calls
Friday: approx 7 calls

From Monday to Wednesday the number of calls decreases as the days progresses hence the relationship for the first three days is negative but then the number of calls start increasing and then again decreasing, making the relationship undefined. Hence overall the relationship is un-directional or not meaningful. OEs are not helpful sometimes.

I had the same doubt. "not meaningful" is very subjective, and this question becomes "harder" just because it is not well written. I put the data on chatGPT and it gave me a negative trendline (see attachment). "not meaninful" should be only for when the signal of the slope is impossible to be determined by eye, which is not the case here.
