Hi hcmonkey,

The proctors start the test as soon as you return to the work station as you cannot be inside the testing area during the time of break.
So this automatically implies that if you are inside, you want to restart the test.

Hi Rich,

Thanks for the reply - despite the hiccup (pretty embarrassing on my part  - I should have read the rules more carefully ahead of time) I think I did well and am grateful for my score.

1) 720 (Q 48 - 73rd; V41 94th), 8 IR
2) My dream score was a 740
3) I have not decided yet if I am going to retake. Part of me is concerned that my quant score is below 80th percentile ( I want to transition into finance post bschool and don't come from a quant background) and I feel that without the hiccup on the quant section I could have maybe (I would hope) have performed better. That being said my two GMATPrep practice test scores were 730 (Q 48, V41) and 730 (Q 48, V42). So I got the same raw score on the actual GMAT as I got on my practice tests, but I guess on the actual GMAT the score equated to a 720 instead of a 730 (I guess this changes for each test?). For prep I took the Manhattan Prep class and then studied for 3 weeks afterwards - so I studied for a total of about 3 months. During my practice tests I didn't use the breaks to do anything but get a drink of water or go to the bathroom but I would use the break before the quant section to organize my scratch paper (I clearly should have paid more attention!) - so this obviously really threw me off on the real exam. Overall the quant section has been frustrating for me, while I realize 720 is a great score - traditionally i've been very strong in math yet I haven't been able to break 48 on the GMAT. In reviewing my practice tests a lot of the quant questions I kick myself for not getting, because they make total sense in review but I just didn't get them or see the "trick" under the time pressure of the exam.

Hi hcmonkey,

First off, a 720/Q48 is an outstanding score (it's above the 90th percentile overall), so you should apply to any Business Schools that interest you. Some financial institutions actually do ask for a job applicant's GMAT Score and Quant Scaled Score (although those are relatively rare situations). If your long-term career goals involve working for one (or more) of those institutions, then you might have to factor that into your decisions. All things being equal, I would not advise that you retest, but the choice is up to you.

It is interesting that you scored Q48 so many times; you have likely developed some minor 'bad habits' during your studies that keep you from picking up those missing points. At this scoring level, the GMAT becomes really 'sensitive' to little mistakes, so you likely made a few on Test Day (at in-opportune times) - improving that Score will require a higher degree of 'precision' in your work (and that really means more note-taking and less 'doing work in your head).

GMAT assassins aren't born, they're made,
Rich
