Hi,

I took the GMAT on the 9th of June and scored a 710 (Q 47, V 40). I need some advice on how to improve my quant performance. My aim is to score a 49 or 50 in Quant. Retake is on 13th July.

First, I don't think that my Quant score reflects my quantitative abilities. A part of the reason of my low quant score can be nerves, however I do struggle with DS questions especially those on inequalities. This weakness perhaps added to my nerves. I have practiced the OG questions, and even 700-800 question banks. However, I do not have a well defined strategy to tackle DS questions. Apart from that I don't have any problem with the concepts and tackling even advanced PS problems.

Please advise on how I should prepare for the next attempt, along with any CAT that truly reflect the Offical Exams.

Thanks!

First of all, a 710 is a great starting point!

The good news is that your quant is in a really solid place. Now, to increase your quant score to an an advanced level, you probably need to study each topic “with a fine-toothed comb” to determine your exact weaknesses.

For example, if you are reviewing Number Properties, be sure that you practice 50 or more questions just from Number Properties: LCM, GCF, units digit patterns, divisibility, remainders, etc. Once complete, do a thorough analysis of each incorrect question. If you got a remainder question wrong, ask yourself why you got it wrong. Did you make a careless mistake? Did you not properly apply the remainder formula? Was there a concept you did not understand in the question? By properly analyzing your mistakes, you will be able to more efficiently fix your weaknesses and in turn improve your GMAT quant knowledge. Number Properties is just one example; follow this process for all quant topics.

In order to follow the path described above, you may need some new quant materials. Thus, take a look at the GMAT Club reviews for the [url=https://gmatclub.com/reviews/highest-rated-gmat-courses/best-for-quant-4
]best quant courses[/url].

Lastly, I wrote an article about How To Increase Your GMAT Quant Score.

Feel free to reach out with any further questions.

Hi Sahil,

Welcome to GMAT Club!!

Here is my advice to you for improving DS skills, its a skill that needs to be honed with the right smarter approach.

The only thing i would suggest you to do is spend ONE WHOLE SINGLE DAY dedicated to diligently learning from RonPurewal "Thurday's with Ron" Manhattan Study Hall videos. Ron is a multiple times 800 scorer on the GMAT & an absolute legend at teaching GMAT.

The goal setting & upfront work approach, taught by Ron, is the kind of double edged sword you need to slice & dice DS.

The videos can be found here https://gmatclub.com/forum/mgmat-study-hall-thursdays-with-ron-quant-videos-209183.html#p1607954

Watch the videos for below dates ( you may find more useful videos as well there)

2 Feb 2017
16 Feb 2017
8 Dec 2016
15 Dec 2016

Watch & learn the strategy, replicate Ron's approach to practice questions, crack the real exam. You can thank me later!

Thanks,
GyM
