So I just got back from my 5th GMAT Exam and I'm ready to give up. I started studying for the GMATs in May 2017 with a goal of 720+ and planned on applying to MBA programs in R1 2018. I used the MGMAT books and online videos and took the GMAT three times.

Official Exam:
1) September 2017 - 700 (Q45 V40)
2) October 2017 - 680 (Q47 V36)
3) December 2017 - 700 (Q46 V40)

After my third exam I decided to take a break and restart in April once my jobs busy season was over. So in April of this year I started restudying and I hired a private GMAT tutor. The tutor said Quant was my major issue and that that is what we should focus on. I think we should have done more verbal because I believed that the V40's I got were flukes but he insisted we focus on Quant. I spent 3 months working with the tutor and took 5 official GMAT practice exams under test conditions before my July scheduled exam date.

Practice Exam:
1) 710 (Q45 V42)
2) 750 (Q50 V42)
3) 730 (Q50 V39)
4) 770 (Q51 V44)
5) 690 (Q49 V35) - I took this exam at work while hiding it from my boss who kept walking by which meant constantly minimizing it while having the timer run down.

So after these 5 practice exams I was confident that my fourth try on the GMAT would be a success so July 28 I took the GMAT again and I could not believe my score. I got a 690 (Q49 V35). I was stunned when I saw that number pop up. How could I get the same exact score on my exam as I did on my last practice exam when that practice exam was under conditions much worse then an actual exam?!?! Needless to say I was very depressed but I pushed through and decided that that exam was a fluke and to sign up for one final exam 3 weeks later on August 18. During that time I did tons of OG math and verbal practice questions and took one final OG practice exam and got a 730 (Q49 V41). After I saw this score I knew I was prepared for my 5th and final attempt. Well today was that attempt and it did not get well. I ended up receiving a 690 (48Q 38V). I honestly could not believe I got this score again. I'm at the point now where I give up and will accept the fact that I will not be able to get into a top 10 or 15 school. I'm just unable to get a high quant score and a high verbal score on the same exam. After 15 months of studying and tutoring I'm stuck at a 700.

Summary of GMAT Exams:
1) 700 (Q45 V40)
2) 680 (Q47 V36)
3) 700 (Q46 V40)
4) 690 (Q49 V35)
5) 690 (Q48 V38)
:(

Hi
Sorry to hear that your Gmat score wasn't as expected. But 690 is not a bad score at all and with a strong application most colleges would accept that. I would not suggest to go for the Gmat again but start working on the applications.

Yeah my highest score I got was 700. I'm just going to apply with that and hope the rest of my application is strong enough to overcome it.

GMAT is just one component. Its definitely not the end of the road. You can still work on the other aspects of your profile and create a compelling story.
Also, you have scored upto Q49 and V40, just that it came in separate exams. However, some schools will notice that and conclude that you have the ability.
Good luck for your applications.

Yeah I'm really hoping the schools don't ding me too hard on the exam and notice I got a Q49 and V40. I just wasn't able to put them both together on the same exam.

Hi eton123,

I’m sorry to hear how things went for you on the GMAT. The good news is that 700 is still a pretty great GMAT score.

That being said, given how well you scored on your practice exams, and given how long you have been studying, I think that you may have subconsciously put an immense amount of pressure on yourself to succeed on the GMAT, and thus you did not perform up to your ability level on test day.

At this point, I can understand why you feel done with the GMAT; however, if any part of you wants to retake, feel free to reach out to me directly, and I’d be happy to provide some further advice.
