I would like to think that my story is a bit different from many other success stories on here for several reasons, one I have used up most of my attempts (6 out of 8) and second, I have sat the exam for the last time and obtained a better score after I was admitted to the school of my choice. But, I will start my story from the very beginning.
I decided to do an MBA after I had passed my CFA level one exam in June 2016. I didn't know about the Gmatclub at the time and picked the first prep books I could find. I read through 1,000 or so pages of Kaplan books and solved several old exams, the format of which changed, so, probably those exams were only useful for getting to know the stuff tested, but not for improving the time management. Funny enough, I didn’t do any actual full length exams prior my first attempt that resulted in a 580 score in April 2017. I was content that I only needed a few points to get over the 600 mark. However, I decided not to dive straight in, but rather to re-read fundamentals in Exam PAL. Unfortunately, this approach didn't work for me.
In Q4 2017, I purchased a full course and hired private tutors from the GMATinsight. This step turned out to be the winning one in the longer term. The tutors, Mr. Bhoopendra Singh and Dr. Sushma Jha ran me through the core topics, shared hints and tips and were always available for a consultation on a short notice.
Because of a very intense nature of my work (I invest funds into companies), I had no real time to spare for another exam attempt in 2017. Nonetheless, I decided to clear up my diary and booked a date. I probably got in the transition phase, during which the exam became shorter. I scored 500. I was really devastated, although not defeated, and I tried again in March 2018 and obtained 530
.
Following my 3rd attempt, I decided to change testing centres from Glasgow Pearson to Manchester. I really didn't enjoy the Glasgow Pearson. It was too noisy even with earplugs, so hard to concentrate! I took my 4th exam in Manchester in May 2018 and improved a little to 570. I continued to study hard during the next month and scored 580 on the 5th attempt in July 2018. That attempt was especially disappointing, since my verbal score went dramatically down due to a lousy mistake. I began to draw a verbal table, while the instructions were still on the screen. An invigilator came over and informed me that was not allowed. I got a close escape, however the attempt was wasted.
At that time, I was drained and needed a break. I decided to concentrate on application to schools. I picked 4 schools, 2 in the UK and 2 in Spain and applied to them on the basis of the combined score from the 4th and 5th attempts. I showed that my verbal score was usually higher and that quant improved to 47 during the last attempt. It was a long shot, but it worked and 4/4 schools invited me for interview.
I landed 3 offers, 2 of which with scholarships. I picked a Spanish school without a scholarship.
What happened later was my desire to prove to myself that had it not been for the incidental organizational mistake, I would have obtained a better score. In March 2019, I took the exam for the 6th time and scored 640, 47 in quant and 31 in verbal after, an improvement of 60 points over a 2.5 years since the start of my preparation.
Happy to answer any questions from current students, but my basic advice to anyone is persistence is key, never give up whatever score you might get in the interim
