I started my serious preparations last year in Aug. Got myself enrolled in a coaching (Top One Percent) and started following their material religiously for the next 6 months. I had been preparing with 2 of my friends A and K. During the process, I realized how weak I am in Verbals. Luckily, the Engineering preparations helped with the Quants. I took double the time to understand RC/CR when compared to the people I was preparing with
Knowing that GMAT Classic would get over by Jan'24 and thinking I can do better, I planned on giving 2 more reattempts. Gave one on 10 Jan and another on 30 Jan. Sadly, got a score of 610(Q49/V25/IR5) and 640(Q49/V28/IR5). The 610 score was an offline attempt so I got an ESR as well. Realized that I got 8%ile in SC, 96%ile in RC and 58%ile in CR. In RC, all Questions were correct which was a morale booster as I was initially very weak and took 20mins for Paras which had to be solved in 6-8 mins. Also realizing that SC is going away in Focus and DI is coming I thought strong Quants would save me.
After that I realized that I will have to prepare for GMAT Focus and need more time. I gave a GMAT Focus mock to see where I lie before starting the GMAT Focus preparations. My score was a mere 535(Q85%ile/DI58%ile/V4%ile). I realized that I have to mainly focus on Verbal and DI. In this mock, I had botched up the timings for Verbal (this has been an issue with me since starting, i tend to read slowly and do a lot of rechecking the answers). DI I hadnt really practiced so was ok with it.
Started preparing for GMAT Focus seriously since Feb. I maintained a healthy lifestyle going to the gym/going for runs/focusing on work while at the same time giving time to GMAT Focus.
My preparation regimen was mainly using GMAT Club. I had taken the
Forum Quiz and they had recently released the "Adaptive" feature which made the questions adaptive. I thought this was as good to simulating the GMAT as it could get. I applied filters for all the top coaching questions like Manhattan/Jamboree/
Magoosh/GMAT Advanced Questions/e-GMAT/LSAT[for CR and RC(although by the end of preparation removed LSAT RC)]/EA/McGraw/Kaplan/Veritas etc and solved. All throughout I tried to maximize my correct answers while learning the concepts. Did this in GMAT Focus format. For Verbal took 12 RC and 11 CR questions and for DI took 20 questions mixed in TPA/MSR/DS/G&T and shuffled between those.
By the end of the prep, I started getting ~60% correct in Verbal (all medium and hard questions). The ones that I got wrong were Hard ones mostly. Went religiously through the solutions discussed on GMAT Club for the same. In DI, also I started getting ~60-70% correct. I realized that I was weak in TPA and G&T and practiced a lot more of those to get better. Same for CR & RC. (Before my 1st December GMAT Attempt, I used to religiously solve 3-4 RCs everyday). Anyway, I thought I was getting better. At the same time, I practiced Quant not to lose touch. In Quant I realized I was bad in Sets and Prob/Pnc and practiced more in those topics.
Around a month back, I gave the 2nd official GMAT Focus mock and scored - Quant100%ile/DI95%ile/Verbal50%ile - 685 score. That too with around 5-6 mins spare in Quant which I used to change a Probability Answer and around 2/3 mins in DI. In Verbal I barely managed to complete. This was a major confidence booster and I thought whatever I was doing was right. I booked an exam date of a month ahead (today) as this was my 4th attempt and only 5 attempts are allowed in a year. I wanted sufficient time before the 1st round of applications in September and also wanted to give me a one final attempt before 2nd round in December in case I needed it.
Anyway, fast forwarding the month, I practiced a lot more in RC and CR. Started revising the LSAT Manhattan book for CR concepts thoroughly and applied that in the timed practice sets - realized my CR time accuracy has improved. Meanwhile kept practicing DI and Quant to not lose touch.
A few days before exam, practiced Quant weak topics by applying filters and solving Questions from those. Same for DI.
Realized that if I don't practice DI for a bit, I start losing touch and take more time. So had to keep those DI skills sharpened.
One day before the exam, I practiced all Easy and Medium level OG questions for CR as I had not practiced them all. In Easy 90% accuracy and Medium 80%. Thought this was good. Did not get time for Hard ones. Also, did not want to demotivate myself. Did the same for RC. Solved like 15-20 paras to get in the zone.
Well today, I gave my GMAT Focus examination and was confident in Verbal. Time management was ok and the last day CR practice sure helped. Was able to narrow down on the options real quick. RC felt a real rusty though, got a little bamboozled in a few questions. Nevertheless, kept the speed and moved ahead.
Took the break and moved ahead with DI. Di seemed easy and rushed through the questions. DS questions based on word problems were something new and I hadn't prepared for those. Gave best guesses and moved ahead. All in all, was confident in my answers. In the 2nd last question, was taking a lot of time and the time got over but somehow managed to click submit and OK. Saw the "Review" page for a bit and then the time got over. Was not able to attempt the last question. Still was confident that it was a good attempt as I solved the answers with conviction.
Quant was easy. Raced through the questions. Was not sure of maybe 1/2 answers. Rest were easy. Completed this section with 3 mins spare.
Results - Quant89%ile/Verbal60%ile/DI20%ile - 565
I don't know how I feel about the above result. Quant and Verbal is Ok but DI? I mean I have no idea what went wrong or what to do better. I had done better than that in my 1st mock before I started my preparations. Even, my IR of December was a 7/8. Still waiting for the ESR.
Just felt like sharing the same with the experts and getting advice on how to get better. Seems like I need to hugely improve in DI (although I am already decent in graphs/charts and maths in general) and somewhat in Verbal as well (atleast need to push it to 70%ile). Not sure if I should write the GMAT one more time or to make use of this score itself.
My profile - Male with a GMAT 660(Classic)(Q49/V30/IR7) , Class 10(9.8/10), Class 12 (96%), Passout from a Top 10 Engineering College in India (7.76/10 GPA), good extra curriculars in college/work, volunteering experience with a child rights organization, running marathons, organising office events etc. Working with a Fortune 250 American Tech company as a Software Developer with 3+ YOE. Have one promotion at hand. I want to get into Product Management post MBA and have already started working towards it by getting into a mentorship program at work.
I am aiming colleges in Asia. Do you think I stand a chance with 660 in NUS/NTU? ISB seems to be out of question with this score. Or should I give one last try for GMAT Focus in December (before the 2nd round) as this would be my fifth attempt in the running year.
Thanks
