Hey everyone, I had my appointment at the Delhi consulate yesterday.

*Status: Rejected under 214(b)*

Wanted to post it here as a warning since I hadn’t heard of these questions being asked before.

Slot time: 8:20 am
Reached Consulate at 7:30am
Actual appointment time: Approx 10:30 am

This was counter 17, notorious for rejecting 70-80% of the applicants.

VO: Good morning
Me: Good morning
VO: (Two harm questions)
Me: No

Spends some time looking at the screen typing something.

VO: Where did you do your undergraduate degree?
Me: (Answered)
VO: What did you study there?
Me: I studied Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Finance

(Types something for a while again)

VO: How did you end up going into your business after mechanical Engineering?

I’m a founding member of a SaaS startup

Me: (Explained my motivation for this)
VO: What’s your company turnover?
Me: (Answered)

(Types something again for 2 mins)

VO: Did you fill your DS-160 on your own
Me: Yes I did (I had)
VO: Are you sure?
Me: Yes, absolutely.
VO: Did you book the appointment for today?
(I misinterpreted it as him asking about a clarification regarding the date of the appointment)
Me: Yes, I did book an appointment for Today, July 16th
VO: I meant, did you book it or did you have an agent book it for you?
Me: Oh, I tried to book it on my own but I did have some help in doing this.
VO: Please pass all of your documents here for administrative processing, sit on the side in the meantime.

I sat in the waiting area for ~1.5-2 hours until almost all other appointments were done. A different lady called me at her counter.

She asked about the appointment booking. I was honest about the agent situation. She explained that I was not in any trouble and that she appreciated my honesty and this wouldn’t be held against me. Gave a slip with an email ID and asked to send all the agent details and correspondence to the mail id. Asked me to sit back down and wait for my VO to call me back up.

(Called to the VO counter 30-40 mins later)

VO Asked the ds160 and agent questions again. I answered truthfully.

VO: Unfortunately your visa has been rejected under section 214(b). You can reapply whenever you want, thanks.

*My take/suggestions*:

My hunch is the application was flagged earlier itself, they had some tool which was helping them to find these applications. Quite a few other people were also going through this (especially the ones from counter 15 & 17) who had their visas rejected. This was one of the first times they started flagging this so almost everyone was unprepared for the situation.

For anyone who has appointments coming up, I’d suggest speaking to your agent if you have one to understand the appointment booking process beforehand and be prepared for similar questions. *Dont lie* to the VO, a girl after me kept telling the lady officer that she did it on her own even after the lady said she knew otherwise, she’s banned from reapplying from what I could tell.

Advise you all to be careful, and all the very best!
That's insane
