I'm interested in applying to Wharton R2 and wanted to get this board's thoughts on something. Anytime I mention Wharton to people, they quickly respond "That's a Finance School, why would you want to go there?".

What is Wharton like for someone not from a finance background? Does anyone have any experience with the Healthcare MBA program? Does Wharton prefer quanty finance kids, or are they looking to diversify the interests of their students?

From what my interviewer told me last week, the interests of the students are very diverse and include healthcare, entrepreneurship, marketing, sales, engineering, and a host of others. It has traditionally been known as a finance school but is slowly becoming more varied in its student body.

I'm replying to this from my classroom at Wharton...currently in a class called Management of People at Work and it couldn't be less quantitative. There are certainly quantitative classes and the school likes that approach, but the majority of my class is not from finance. Personally, I think anyone who tells you that has never been to Wharton and is basing their comment off of the alumni they know and the school's reputation.

Thanks for the replies, it's funny how people get something uninformed in their head. For current students, what is the class work load like at Wharton? I'm finding it can really span the divide between relaxed to extremely rigorous at different B schools.

the first year seems to be rather relaxed with only 15 hours of courses a week. of course students take part in a lot of extra currics which increases their workload but it seldom is more than 8-10 hours per day.

most of the time is spent networking (slang for partying )

i forgot to mention earlier but this is in a large part due to grade non disclosure which means that students have no incentive to score higher than a 'c' on every course

let me correct the "finance" mystique about Wharton. Wharton is a very quant focused program. if you like number crunching, have an analytical mind with a Type A personality than you will be right at home at Wharton. Finance has become a very quantitatively complex industry and therefore you see wharton grads succeeding there. Marketing is also increasingly becoming very quantitative and as such wharton's program has top ranking this field as well.

So you should ask yourself, can you do a lot of math, have a social personality and are confident...then wharton might be a school for you.

Hi all,

In the letter of recommendation of Wharton, there is not a list of questions for recommender? That means they can write whatever they want?

Thank you.

Hi all,

Thank you.

Hey, The letters of recommendations should answer to a list of questions specified on the Wharton website (Can also be accessed through the link that is sent to the recommender as was told to me by my supervisor). The questions were as follows:

How long have you known the applicant and describe your relationship to the applicant?
Provide an example of constructive feedback you have provided to the applicant. How did the applicant receive this feedback and what efforts did the applicant make to address the concern?
Please provide an example of a time when the applicant was particularly successful at interacting with others in a team (employees, peers, managers, etc.); how was the applicant successful? How does the applicant compare to his/her peers in this dimension?
How has the applicant’s career progressed over the time that you have known him/her? How does this growth compare to his/her peer group? Please describe the peer group that you are comparing this applicant.
Provide any additional comments you think would assist the Admissions Committee in making its decision.

My marketing professor once used this as an example of how a brand can have a profound and lasting influence on an organization. The Wharton School was once called the Wharton School of Finance and Economy.

round1app, relax.. as i said (and i personally know one more person whose experience was like this + now even shekmba), in all probability, the questions and the interview will be driven from your resume.. someone would have had projects to discuss and hence the 'pushing' bit.. for me it was a deal.. and a pitch.. and questions around such stuff..

Off-campus.

Yes, the questions are mostly an offshoot of the resume. Know you resume well and know your experiences well. Besides that, know your leadership style and team management style. And of course the canned responses ;).

In the past, 2nd year students and alums conducted all the interviews. Standard questions were necessary so Adcom could standardize assessments coming from a diverse group of interviewers. This year Adcom members (hubs) and 2nd year students (on campus) are conducting interviews. My guess is that 2nd year students are asking standard questions because their assessments still have to be standardized. However, Adcom members are conducting "fluid" interviews since they already know which qualities they would like to see in candidates. Just my 2c.

I interviewed with Tiffany in Mumbai. It lasted about ~40mins. Very conversational, no set questions, one response led to another question. I'd charecterize the experience as a pleasant chat rather than a formal interview. On the flip side, I prepared all these great stories that I didn't get a chance to talk about. On top of that, some of my "prompt" responses were just okay and could be stronger.

Has anyone confirmed that Wharton indeed is conducting smaller number of interviews this year? Hence higher hit rate of interview candidates getting accepted?

All on the same day (it's not the "last day," it's "decision day"). The welcome committee will start making calls that morning and will continue until the afternoon when they admissions department will send an email notifying everyone that their decision is available online. The email won't communicate your decision. And not everyone who's admitted will receive a call so don't despair if you don't get one.
