Official Solution:

What is the value of \(|m - n|\)?

(1) \(n^2 = 36\).

This implies that \(n=6\) or \(n=-6\). This information is clearly insufficient, as we have no data regarding \(m\).

(2) \(m^2 = 81\).

This implies that \(m=9\) or \(m=-9\). Again, this is insufficient since we lack information about \(n\).

(1)+(2) If \(m\) and \(n\) have the same sign (either \(n=6\) and \(m=9\) OR \(n=-6\) and \(m=-9\)), then \(|m - n|=3\). However, if \(m\) and \(n\) have different signs (either \(n=6\) and \(m=-9\) OR \(n=-6\) and \(m=9\)), then \(|m - n|=15\). Given the two different possible answers, it is still not sufficient.
