GMAT CLUB TESTS' FRESH QUESTION.

What is the value of |m| - |n|?

(1) n^2 = 36
(2) m^2 = 81

OFFICIAL EXPLANATION:

What is the value of |m| - |n|?

To solve this question recall that \(\sqrt{x^2}=|x|\)

(1) n^2 = 36. Take the square root from both sides: |n| = 6. We don't know the value of |m|. Not sufficient.

(2) m^2 = 81. Take the square root from both sides: |m| = 9. We don't know the value of |n|. Not sufficient.

(1)+(2) |m| - |n| = 9 - 6 = 3. Sufficient.

Answer: C.

(1) : Does not tell us value of m. Insuff

(2) : Does not tell value of n. Insuff

(1) + (2) : n = +6 or -6 & m = +9 or -9

|m| = 9 & |n| = 6
Hence Sufficient

Option (C) is our answer.

Best,
Gladi

(1) n^2 = 36

n = 6 or -6

No info about m

Insufficient

(2) m^2 = 81

m = 9 or -9

No info about m

Insufficient

Combine both 1 & 2

In any value of n & m, then |m| - |n| will have fixed value. Let's see:

Let n =6 & m = 9....|m| - |n| = |9| - |6| = 3

Let n =6 & m = -9....|m| - |n| = |-9| - |6| = 3

Let n =-6 & m = 9....|m| - |n| = |9| - |-6| = 3

Let n =-6 & m = -9....|m| - |n| = |-9| - |-6| = 3

Sufficient
