What is the value of r/2 + s/2 ?

(1) (r + s)/2 = 5
(2) r + s = 10

Target question: What is the value of r/2 + s/2?
This is a great candidate for REPHRASING the target question.
Since both fractions have the same denominator, we can add the numerators.
We get: r/2 + s/2 = (r + s)/2
REPHRASED target question: What is the value of (r + s)/2

Statement 1: (r + s)/2 = 5
This is PERFECT!
Since we can answer the REPHRASED target question with certainty, statement 1 is SUFFICIENT

Statement 2: r + s = 10
If r + s = 10, then (r + s)/2 = (10)/2 = 5
Since we can answer the REPHRASED target question with certainty, statement 2 is SUFFICIENT

What is the value of r/2 + s/2 ?

(1) (r + s)/2 = 5
(2) r + s= 10

Solution:

Question Stem Analysis:

We need to determine the value of r/2 + s/2, i.e., (r + s)/2.

Statement One Alone:

We can re-express the fraction (r + s) / 2 as the sum of two fractions: r/2 + s/2. Thus, the sum is 5. Statement one alone is sufficient.

Statement Two Alone:

Since r + s = 10, then (r +s)/2 = 10/2 = 5. Statement two alone is sufficient.
