I can’t speak to #1 but I’m both sustainability + social impact oriented and non-traditional. I didn’t go for Columbia because a) didn’t want to go to NYC for b school and b) Columbia & Stern have the reputation of being for finance. While there are going to be people who do different things, ultimately reputation will somewhat matter as it will affect how employers see you.

FWIW I ended up applying to Stanford, Kellogg, Sloan, Ross, and Tuck. For social impact I would say Sloan, Ross, Fuqua, Haas, SOM, and Johnson are best for top 15 in this area specifically. Of course, it’s a good idea to weigh other considerations too.
