Whereas automobile buyers, due to a system designed to avoid the standardization of retail prices, cannot easily compare the cost of different car models, so they cannot reliably compare the discounts given at competing dealerships.

(A) Whereas automobile buyers
(B) Just as automobile buyers
--> CORRECT
(C) Like automobile buyers who
(D) In as much as an automobile buyer
--> "they" in the non underlined cant refer to singular subject

(E) In the same way an automobile buyer
--> same as D

First of all the flow of idea is in one way there is no opposite views. A is out

The sentence because automobile buyers cant do X, they cant do Y

Also the correct construction is

Just as X so Y

Its straight B.

Hope this helps..!!

But does the meaning of the sentence changed when we say just as X so Y , Since there is no marker to say there is no Opposite views

check the non underlined portion of the sentence:

Whereas automobile buyers, due to a system designed to avoid the standardization of retail prices, cannot easily compare the cost of different car models, so they cannot reliably compare the discounts given at competing dealerships.

(B) Just as automobile buyers
--> CORRECT

the bold part "SO" in the non underlined part indicates some kind of conclusion is there. hence the first part has to act as some premise and that too supportive one.

Analogically we may say; X plays all the time, so he cant pass the exam.

In this sentence also the first part supports the conclusion and the word "SO" does hints that.

Using just as X so Y doesnt alters the meaning; it clearly put the idea, in correct construction, out of curtain.

Hope this helps..!!

The correct answer is B due to idiom "Just as X so Y" the last two choices are incorrect because the underlined portion is singular where as the last un-underlined portion is plural so eliminate D and E. A is incorrect because it shows an opposing view where the structure should have the same flow this is not a two alternatives. Like is not the correct idiom and it just doesnt sound right to me gramatically.

Thanks kraizada

But Can you also explain me how to change the not underlined part to use whereas ,to show an opposite conclusion

"WHEREAS" is used to show contrast in ideas in same sentence OR BETTER SAY contrast in ideas between two standalone sentences. The above sentence if written as follows stands good.

Whereas automobile buyers cannot easily compare the cost of different car models, they can reliably compare the discounts given at competing dealerships.

If above sentence is a part of some argument, the author concludes "automobile buyers can reliably compare the discounts given at competing dealerships despite the fact that they can't easily compare the cost of different car models."

Hope this clarifies....!!

(A) Whereas automobile buyers -> No need of contrast here
(B) Just as automobile buyers --> Just as.. so -- Correct Idiom
(C) Like automobile buyers who --> We can not compare automobile buyers with themself.
(D) Inasmuch as an automobile buyer --> AWKWARD
(E) In the same way an automobile buyer --> AWKWARD

1. Buyers - They -----> D, E are out
2. There is no comparison between buyers and buyers themselves ---> C is out
3. There is no contrast ---> A is out
