I'm little confused, why isn't the answer C. we know Bob's rate and the difference between them so if we combine it, that should be sufficient.

Not C, because statement (1) gives only the size of the difference, not the direction.

With statement (2), Bob types 80 words per minute.

Using statement (1), John could type either 79 or 81 words per minute.

If John types 79, Bob is faster.
If John types 81, John is faster.

So even together, the statements do not answer the question. Answer: E.

Hi Idonije let me try to help

We were asked who is faster Bob or Jon

St 1 says |B-J|=1 so it can be either B-J or J-B so Not sufficient
St 2 says Bob speed is 80 words /min No info about jon

combining 1 & 2

it can 80-79 or 81-80 still not sufficient, so C can't be answer

So E
