Business Schools look at the work experience 'component' of you application for a number of reasons. The emphasis of certain MBA programs tends to match better for applicants with certain experience better than others. Schools sometimes look for applicants with 'interesting' (re: non-traditional) backgrounds. Schools also look for evidence of leadership experience.
