I, personally, can vouch for the fact that its not something new. When I took my GMAT in may, I found the questions to be different from the usual GMATprep set.
But don't worry, even if you prepared for 40+ in verbal without knowing that changes have happened, you still would have scored score that much. By revealing the changes, the GMAC has made it easier for students to focus on topics that are more likely to show up.
GMAC has not said anything on the structure of the questions so I would assume that that would remain the same. So all in all, its not something that should bother test takers..

FYI - these changes have been slowly happening for the past several years - so nothing sudden is happening. They just happened to announce it to bring greater awareness to this "change."
