Currently, on a certain website, out of all online users, 2,400 are registered users, and 1,000 are male. How many users are currently online?

(1) The number of online female users is twice the number of online unregistered users.

(2) Among the online users, 800 are registered males.

We are asked to find the total number of users online.

Statement (1):
The number of online female users is twice the number of unregistered users.
Let x be the number of unregistered users. Then, the number of female users is 2x.
We know the following:
- There are 2,400 registered users (male and female combined),
- There are x unregistered users,
- There are 1,000 male users (registered and unregistered combined),
- There are 2x female users.

The total number of online users is:
2400 + x = 1000 + 2x
Solving for x, we find x = 1400.
So, the total number of online users is 2400 + 1400 = 3800.
Statement (1) alone is sufficient.

Statement (2):
Among the online users, 800 are registered males.
This gives us information about the number of registered males, but we don’t know how many unregistered females there are, so we can’t determine the total number of online users.
Statement (2) alone isn’t sufficient .

(I)

Total Registered = 2400
Total Unregistered = x
Total male = 1000
Total female = 2x

we can say
2400 + x = 1000 + 2x
Solve for x and put in any 1 equation

sufficient for

(II)

Total Registered = 2400
Total male = 1000
REgistered male = 800
unregistered male = 200

not sufficient data

Answer A.

Solving by the matrix method. We need to find X
MaleFemale
Registered2400
Unregistered
1000X

Statement 1.
Taking online unregistered users as Y
Online female users 2Y

MaleFemale
Registered2400
UnregisteredY
10002YX

We get 2 equations

2400 + Y = X
1000 + 2Y = X

We can solve this to get X and Y
Sufficient

Statement 2.

MaleFemale
Registered8001600 (Deriving from 2400-800)2400
Unregistered200 (deriving from 1000-800)
1000X

I still don't know what X is
Insufficient.

We know from the question:
Total registered = 2,400
Male = 1,000 users

online users?

(1) Insufficient. Female = 2*unregistered. We need more than that
(2) Insufficient. Among online users, 800 are registered males -> 2,400 - 800 =1600 registered females.
T = M+F = we need more information since we only know a bit

Combined we still need more information. Answer (E)

total online users = x
2400 registered, 1000 males, x-1000 females, x-2400 unregistered online users

(1)female users is twice of unregistered users

x-1000 = 2(x-2400)
x = 3800
Sufficient
(2)800 registered males
This can just give the count of females online registered users (2400 - 800) and unregistered males (1000-800). We cant find the total users unless we have the info on number of females

Statement 1 says that Female (F) = 2U (twice of unregistered users)

From the question, we are given that Male (M) = 1000 and Registered user (R) = 2400. We also know that Male + Female = Total Online users = registered users (R) + unregistered users (U). Hence,
M + F = R + U
1000 + F = 2400 + U
since F = 2U,
1000 + 2U = 2400 + U
so U = 1400 and Total users = R+U = 2400+1400 = 3800
Sufficient

Statement 2 tells us that among the online users, 800 are registered males, however, it gives us no information about the females or unregistered users.
Insufficient

Correct Answer - (A) - Statement 1 alone is sufficient to answer the question

2,400 online users are registered
1,000 online users are male

Total number of online users = T
The number of unregistered users = U
Number of registered users = T - U
Number of female users = F
Number of male users = T - F

Statement 1
It is given that F = 2U

We know that
T - U = 2,400 ----{1}
T - F = 1,000 ----{2}

Substitute F = 2U
T − 2U = 1,000 ----{3}

Solving 1 and 3,
(T − U) − (T − 2U) = 2,400 − 1,000
U = 1,400

Substitute U into equation 1,
T − 1,400 = 2,400
T = 3,800

Statement 1 is sufficient

Statement 2
Registered males = 800
Number of registered females is = 2,400 − 800 = 1,600

Total number of males = 1,000
Number of unregistered males is = 1,000−800 = 200

T = Unregistered users + Unregistered users
Cannot determine U or T with the information provided in Statement 2 alone

Statement 2 is insufficient

Hi All,

Assumption from given statements

Unregistered users= total- registered = total-2400

No of females = total - males = total -1000

Statement 1:

No of females = twice the unregistered users

therefore using above equations, total - 1000 = 2 x ( total -2400)

solving this , total = 3800

sufficient statment.

Statement 2:

Therefore registered females= 2400-800= 1600,

we cannot comment about the unregistered users so cannot solve further.

In-sufficient.

1) The number of online female users is twice the number of online unregistered users.

\(x - 1000 = 2 (x - 2400)\)

We have only one unknown variable. Hence, this statement is sufficient to find x.

2) Among the online users, 800 are registered males.

We have no information on the number of females. Hence, the statement is not sufficient.

Double Matrix

Registered and Unregistered
Male and Female

Given R = 2400, M = 1000
Looking for Total online

1. total F = 2x and total U = x (x is not known) not sufficient

2. RM = 800, so RF = 1600
MN = 200, but FN not known (not sufficient)

I'd lay out these equations first thing to have a clear sight of what we are going to need towards solving the question:
Total online users = Registered + Unregistered
Registered = Female registered + Male registered
Unregistered = male unregistered + female unregistered.

(2) Gives us onle Registered Males = NOT SUFFICIENT, eliminate answers A & D
(1) Gives us the relationship between Registered and Unregistered females = 2* unregistered, still we need more information. Eliminate answer B

C or D?

Here We can easily look at the equations and the many variables we still need, clearly answer (E)

Online Users: x (Registered + Unregistered)

Registered Users: 2400
Male: 1000
Unregistered Users: ?
Female: ?

How many users are currently online?

(1) Female users = 2 * Unregistered Users

Not Sufficient as we do not know the exact numbers of either of these groups.

(2) 800 Registered Male

Registered Female = 2400 - 800 = 1600

Unregistered Male = 1000 - 800 = 200

Not Sufficient

(1) + (2) even upon combination we still do not get the Unregistered Female and Total Female users data. Not Sufficient.

[E] is the correct answer.
