A - Nothing seems wrong in this option. sense of writing as a sacrament refers to a personal ritual. them refers to the authors.

B, E - lays is idiomatically incorrect.

C- This one is pretty tempting. I was confused between A and C. The only difference is here, a personal ritual refers to the act of self exploration. Sacrament literally means some kind of ritual, so that is probably the personal ritual the author is referring to.

D- self exploration's act does not make sense. The act is of the authors.

Hence, IMO A.

First easy eliminations: lies or lays? Clearly lies is the correct choice here.
B, E out.

D can be eliminated for the usage of the possessive "self-exploration's act". Clear nonsense.

C has a modifier error - it implies that "the act of self-exploration" is the ritual, when really it is meant to refer to writing. Out.

That leaves us with A as our final answer.

(A) beyond the act of self-exploration lies a sense of writing as a sacrament
Correct option
(B) beyond the act of self-exploration lays a sense of writing as a sacrament
Wrong tense.
(C) a sense of writing as a sacrament lies beyond the act of self-exploration
A personal ritual explains a sense of writing as a sacrament. So that clause should be closer to a personal ritual.
(D) a sacramental sense of writing lies beyond self-exploration’s act
Meaning has been changed.
(E) beyond self-exploration’s acts lays a sacramental sense of writing
Tense Error.

For many authors, beyond the act of self-exploration lies a sense of writing as a sacrament, a personal ritual that provides a sense of solace to them, as religion does for other people.

lays vs lies:

Lay means 'to put down' and it need an object that does it. In this sentence, there is no actor to put something down. Hence any options that has 'lays' is incorrect.

Lie means 'something moving on its own or already in that position'. It does not need an actor/object to bring it that position. Hence, 'Lies'is appropriate for this sentence.

(A) beyond the act of self-exploration lies a sense of writing as a sacrament
There is no grammar or logical errors. Keep A.

(B) beyond the act of self-exploration lays a sense of writing as a sacrament
lays usage is incorrect. Eliminate

(C) a sense of writing as a sacrament lies beyond the act of self-exploration
Misplaced modifier error as the modifier 'a personal ritual' is modifying 'the act of self-exploration' and is illogical. Eliminate.

(D) a sacramental sense of writing lies beyond self-exploration’s act
Possessive noun seems awkward and the misplaced modifier like in option C is also wrong. Eliminate.

(E) beyond self-exploration’s acts lays a sacramental sense of writing
Because of the possessive noun 'acts lays' is causing meaning error. Also lays is incorrect. Eliminate.

Hence the best answer choice is A.

Option C and Option D : seems to be wrong since the modifier 'a personal ritual' wrongly points to the act of self exploration.
Option E : self exploration's acts seems to be the acts performed by self exploration, which is wrong.
Option B : 'lays' is probably not the correct usage since it's used in a sense when you lay something down.

Option A seems to be the correct one.

Per the meaning of the sentence, we require lies rather lays - Eliminate B & E
The un-underlined part of the sentence "a personal ritual that provides a sense of solace" is required to be close to "sacrament" - Eliminate C & D

(A) beyond the act of self-exploration lies a sense of writing as a sacrament - Correct
(B) beyond the act of self-exploration lays a sense of writing as a sacrament
(C) a sense of writing as a sacrament lies beyond the act of self-exploration - modifier placement issue
