12 Days of Christmas 2024 - 2025 Competition with $40,000 of Prizes

Research in the nation of Veloria shows that only 18% of Velorians under 30 volunteer their time, while over 65% of Velorians over 30 participate in volunteer activities regularly. Despite the younger population forming a significant segment of society, nonprofit organizations predict that in ten years, the percentage of Velorians who engage in volunteer activities will likely remain stable or even increase.

Which of the following, if true, provides the strongest grounds for the nonprofits' prediction?

(A) The number of Velorians under 30 is less than the number of Velorians over 30.
(B) The number of nonprofit organizations in Veloria has increased significantly in the past decade.
(C) The research defined a regular volunteer as someone who volunteers at least once a month.
(D) The percentage of Velorians who engaged in volunteer work was higher 25 years ago than it is today.
(E) The rate of volunteer participation among Velorians under 30 has traditionally been low.

A. Even though the passage mention that younger population form significant segment, It does not mean that it is higher than the population which is over 30. Continuation of the same is mentioned in this point. If the number of Valerians over 30 is more then it support the prediction of the Non profit organisation. Accepted
B: Does not provide any support to the prediction as we are not concerned about the number of NP organisations. Rejected
C: Again we are not given any detail about the hours each individual contribute, hence this information does not help in supporting the prediction. Rejected.
D: This contradicts the prediction as it suggest a decline in the volunteer work. Rejected
E: This is inline with the provided information but does not add any new information that can further strengthen the prediction. Rejected.

From the prompt, we learn that 18% of youngsters and 65% of 30+ people are volunteering, and the overall number of volunteers is predicted to groq in 10 years.

  • B is irrelevant as there's no difference how many organizations there're. Eliminate.
  • C is irrelevant as volunteering regularity is out of scope. Eliminate.
  • If anything, D is a weakener as it suggests the trend should be even further decreasing. Eliminate.
  • E is neither here nor there, it's just a statement of historical fact. Eliminate.

Therefore, the only suitable answer is A, which shows that as people flow into 30s (fewer people remain young), the lower-percentage share will kee pdecreasing and the higher-percentage share will grow even further.

(A) The number of Velorians under 30 is less than the number of Velorians over 30.
This fact about population size does not directly address trends in volunteerism or provide insight into future participation. While the number of younger Velorians might be fewer, this doesn’t directly support the claim that overall volunteer participation will increase or stay stable.

(B) The number of nonprofit organizations in Veloria has increased significantly in the past decade.
An increase in nonprofit organizations could suggest a greater demand for volunteers, potentially attracting more people to volunteer. However, this is more of a side factor and doesn't provide direct evidence that volunteer participation will increase, especially if the growth of nonprofit organizations doesn't result in more young people volunteering.

(C) The research defined a regular volunteer as someone who volunteers at least once a month.
This detail is relevant in defining what counts as regular volunteering, but it doesn’t directly support the prediction that volunteer participation will increase or stay stable. It only clarifies the research methodology and does not provide grounds for an increase in volunteer rates.

(D) The percentage of Velorians who engaged in volunteer work was higher 25 years ago than it is today.
This information about historical trends doesn't directly support the prediction that volunteer participation will either increase or remain stable. If anything, it suggests that volunteerism has declined over time, which could counter the expectation of stability or growth in volunteer participation.

(E) The rate of volunteer participation among Velorians under 30 has traditionally been low. CORRECT
This option indicates that the low participation rate of younger Velorians is a longstanding trend. If younger Velorians have traditionally volunteered at low rates, then the prediction that volunteerism will remain stable or increase is likely based on a stable or rising participation rate among older groups, who currently volunteer at a higher rate.

(A) The number of Velorians under 30 is less than the number of Velorians over 30.
This is relevant because if younger people constitute a smaller proportion of the population, their low volunteer rate will have less impact on the overall percentage. This strongly supports the prediction that the percentage of volunteers will remain stable or increase

(B) The number of nonprofit organizations in Veloria has increased significantly in the past decade.
While more organizations could facilitate volunteer opportunities, this does not directly explain why the percentage of volunteers would remain stable or increase, given the low participation of the younger group. This is irrelevant

(C) The research defined a regular volunteer as someone who volunteers at least once a month.
This addresses how the data was collected but does not provide an explanation for the nonprofits' prediction about future volunteer trends. This is irrelevant

(D) The percentage of Velorians who engaged in volunteer work was higher 25 years ago than it is today.
This historical context does not address the future prediction, nor does it provide evidence that the current trends will remain stable or improve. This is irrelevant

(E) The rate of volunteer participation among Velorians under 30 has traditionally been low.
This reinforces that low participation among younger people is not new, but it does not explain why the overall volunteer percentage will remain stable or increase. This is irrelevant

Question : Prove that percentage of velorians who engage in volunteer activities remain stable or increase in 10yrs, despite lower percentage of participation from youth

Options

A - Number of youth is lower and number of above 30 will increase in 10 yrs therefore the numbers will remains stable or increase
B - Irrelevant to the number of people volunteering
C - Irrelevant how the research defined volunteer
D - Does not prove how the numbers will remain stable or increase in the future
E - We do not know if the percentage of total population who volunteer has been traditionally constant - so doesn't prove our prediction

OPTION A

Answer
(E) is correct because it indicates the low volunteer rate among those under 30 has been stable, supporting the idea that overall volunteerism will not decrease.

(A) is wrong because the population distribution doesn't directly affect future volunteerism trends.
(B) is wrong because the increase in nonprofit organizations doesn't guarantee more volunteer participation, especially from younger people.
(C) is wrong because the definition of "regular" volunteering doesn't provide insight into future trends.
(D) is wrong because it shows a historical decline in volunteerism, which contradicts the prediction of stability or growth.

Nonprofit organizations predict that in ten years, the percentage of Velorians who engage in volunteer activities will likely remain stable or even increase.
Strengthen the prediction-
Given, current scenario

18% of Velorians under 30 volunteer
over 65% of Velorians over 30 participate in volunteer activities
younger population forming a significant segment of society

Eg Total population- 300 Younger = 200 Older 100
Avg- (18*2+65*1)/300= 101/300, apx 1/3rd population in volunteer activities
In 10 yrs some of younger will get into older and new younger which we don't have info about

1/3rds stay as is or increase if Old population become little extra.... young no change or decrease...

Old= 150
Young 200
200*18%+150*65%/350
=Apx 38%

This is what satisfies A

Ans A (IMO)

Other options seem irrelevant

A - Irrelevant. Focuses on population size, not volunteer rates.
B - Weakly supports the prediction. More organizations might slightly increase overall volunteering, but doesn't directly address the youth participation gap.
C - Clarifies the research method, but doesn't impact the prediction itself.
D - Contradicts the prediction. This suggests a declining trend in volunteerism overall.
E - Strongest support. If low youth participation is a historical trend, it suggests the current situation won't significantly impact the overall volunteer rate.

As the question talk about Velorians under and over 30, we need to search for something that will increase the volunteer rate.
(A) Does not directly address the likelihood of volunteer participation rates changing in the future (x)
(B) Number of non-profit organization does not directly directly address the likelihood of volunteer participation rates changing in the future (x)
(C) The definition does not provide any future trend (x)
(D) This comparison suggest an decline in voluntary rate => weaken (x)
(E) If this trend continue, it will increase the volunteer rate (v)

Therefore the answer is E

Since this prediction is based on demographics the strongest grounds should clarify anything related to it, only answer A addresses this point, hence select A. Rest of the answer choices are simply off.
