Hi jatin0787,

Most top MBA programs in the USA and Europe require or prefer that candidates have an undergraduate degree. But undergraduate systems vary around the world, and in some parts of the world the undergraduate degrees can be obtained in three years rather than four years. Similarly, some colleges in the USA allow for acceleration in the attainment of undergraduate degrees, and therefore an undergraduate degree can be attained in three years. This is the case, for example, when a candidate tests out of freshman year at a U.S. college on the basis of AP exam performances (exams taken in high school to show mastery of subjects like calculus or English) and enters college as a sophomore, as I did at Harvard. In that case, the student would attain their degree in three years, not four. So what is important is not whether your schooling is 15 years or 16 years, but whether you have the undergraduate degree or will have it by the time you start the MBA program.

As for the number of years of desired full-time work experience, 2-6 years is relatively average. When candidates have only two years of work experience, they may need to work harder in their applications to show they are ready for business school. (This is not true in all cases, however. If a candidate is coming from banking or consulting, for instance, two years of experience can be considered relatively standard.) When a candidate has much more work experience than average - say 8-12 years - they have to work harder in their applications to show they still need the full-time MBA and have not learned most of what they need to learn on the job. They also have to dispel the notion that they are better suited for an executive MBA.

Best wishes,
Shelly Watts

Hi,

I have completed my Economics hons from Delhi University and have 3 years of work experience. I am planning to give Gmat and have some misconceptions regarding that. Just need to know is it necessary to have 16 years of education in order to get admission to a US university or 15years of education and 3years of work ex would be enough?
