Attempted the GMAT just yesterday and scored a 660 (Q45 V36).
1st attempt (30 Sep 2013) - 530 (Q36 V27)
2nd attempt (2 May 2014) - 560 (Q41 V26)
3rd attempt (17 Feb 2015) - 660 (Q45 V36)
Study materials:
Quant: Economist and GMAT Tests but I only had sufficient time to complete 2 tests from GMAT tests
Verbal: Economist and notes from a local coaching centre
Test day almost went perfectly. I had sufficient sleep (9 hours) before getting a good meal (light breakfast and a light lunch about 1.5 hours apart) and I was 15 mins earlier than I should be at the test centre. The usual nerve jitters were there despite this attempt being my third but it soon calmed down after I started working on the test.
I had a comfortable time with the AWA and IR was a little more difficult than I would have liked. Then came the 8 minutes break and this is where I feel I may have blown the opportunity to actually get a score closer to the mean GMAT for the schools I want to enter. According to the timer, I only used up 2 minutes out of the 8 allocated, and may have inadvertently hurt my chances at a better Quant score.
The biggest mistake I did was to not check the clock when I took the break.Already on the first question, I had some problems getting my mind to focus on the usual 600-700 level question - that cost me a good 3.5 minutes and I probably got the crucial first question wrong as well. Nonetheless, I was able to finish all the questions (albeit skipping 3-4 questions) but I was running out of time for the last question, and did not have enough time to confirm my answer - the last question seemed like a 500-600 level question as well. I can't help feeling that last question hurt my score and I would have been at a better mental capacity to perform on the Quant if I did not make that major boo-boo. A Q47 would not have been out of my reach and a 680 (Q47 V36) would have been attainable.
Verbal was pretty okay with the exception of the odd question which tested on punctuation. In any case, I have been getting V34 - V40 in the
MGMAT and official GMAT Prep, so to score a V36 is not a nasty surprise by any means.
While it is certainly comforting to know that I have improved with each attempt and that the improvement from the last attempt was tremendous, I am worried that I may not be able to get into the business schools I believe I am capable of gaining admission into (HEC Paris or IMD).
Having been stuck with the GMAT for almost 2 years now, a huge part of me does not want to do the GMAT again. My aim is to get into 2nd tier business schools in the US or in Europe.
I would like to seek the advice of fellow forum members:
Should I retake the GMAT (4th attempt) or just simply proceed with the applications?
