60 Boys take part in a local swimming competition. Half of the boys are allotted to Team 1 and half are allotted to Team 2. However , 80 percent of the boys prefer Team 1 and the remaining prefer Team 2 . What is the difference between the maximum and the minimum possible number of boys who will not be assigned to the team they prefer ?

Students in Team 1 - 30
Students in Team 2 -30
80% of students who prefer team 1 = 48
Rest students who prefer team 2 = 12
To calculate maximum number of students who will not get a team of their preferences,
assume that all the students who prefer team 1 have been assigned to team 2 i.e. = 30 students
Now 12 students who want to join team 2 will be assigned to team 1.
Therefore, maximum students who will not get team of their preferences = 30+12 = 42 -----(1)
To minimize the number of students who will not get team they want, assume from all 48 students who prefer team 1 30 actually got into team 1. Now remaining 18 students will have to go to team 2 which they don't prefer.
12 students who prefer team 2 will get into team 2.
Hence, minimum number of students who will not get team of their preferences = 18 ----(2)
Answer would be (2) subtracted from (1) = 24
Answer is (B)
