Hi all,
Appreciate any advice you guys may have regarding this.
I just took the GMAT for the first time on Saturday (October 3, 2015) and managed to score 730, with the following breakdown: Q49,V41,IR6. While I'm not disappointed by my score, I was hoping to compensate for my low undergrad GPA (2.8) by maximizing my GMAT score. While I realize that its a remote possibility, I was hoping that a 750+ GMAT score would help in getting a partial scholarship. Therefore I am considering retaking the GMAT. I am confident that I can improve my verbal to a 43-44 (I think I was overconfident during the exam) but not really sure about quant as my final score is slightly above the average quant scores I managed to get in practice tests. I have two questions:
1) Is the retake a good idea?; and
2) Considering that I have an unconventional background (for an Indian male anyway) and work experience and assuming that I could furnish great essays and recommendations, would it be too much to hope for a scholarship even with a GMAT of 750+? or should I even forget about a scholarship with that sort of GPA (regardless of an improved GMAT score) and be worried about an admit?
For context, I am a 27 year old lawyer from India (work experience of 3.5 years), with sports and intellectual property being my main practice areas. I was hoping to transition into a career in sports management after B-School. The schools which I intend to apply to include Anderson, Darden, Stern, ISB and maybe IE.
Again not an admission consultant but from what I have read extensively, no matter what you do on GMAT (even with a 800) , 2.8 GPA will be a massive spot on your application. If you can wait for another year , build an alternate transcript with business school courses and most A+s, this should be your way forward than retaking on a 730. Also, you will have to use the optional essays in the applications to talk about your low GPA. So the best possible scenario for you will be to wait for another year, generate an alternate transcript that will be used in addition to your GPA and then you will have a great shot with your current GMAT.

Hope this helps.
