Hey,

Congrats on the great score!
Do you mind sharing what your quant scores were prior to the actual exam and how you prepared for that section?

I consistently scored Q47-48 for the 2 CATS that i took the week before the exam. In general, I had a strong math foundation as I am an Engineer by training, and I always fared between 80-90% for math tests in college. I knew I was rusty as I have been out of school for 6 years, so I practiced the difficult questions to get my groove back. During the practice, i singled out the questions that took more than 2 minutes, and googled to find ways which I could solve them faster.

Hi,

First of all, big congrats on your score! I know you've indicated on taking the exam again- while I've yet to take the exam myself, from my research on B-schools, I would say your score is more than sufficient! Like you've noted, it is more important to focus on the application materials.

Regarding the material you used, do you mind providing a breakdown of all the guides your purchased? I'm guessing you used the trial CATs from 800 + veritas? Did you purchase the exam prep pack 1 (404 questions)? Finally you mentioned E-gmat verbal SC, did you purchase the standalone package?

Thanks again and sorry for the long question. I am in the process of committing to a similar dedicated routine as you, but I am really unsure on which material to select and I know I am wasting too much time on this. Currently, I'm trying to select between Magoosh, E-gmat, EmpowerGMAT, and Math Revolution. I know this varies from person to person, but I'm having a heck of a time trying to figure it out.

All the best to you!

Congratulations! I took the practice test last week for first time and scored 460 :(. I only have less than 2 months to prepare now, I haven't scheduled my test yet, but the b-school application deadline is April 15th. I am aiming at least 610 and I am afraid I won't have enough time to prepare, since I have full time job. Your post really motivated me!

Thank you!

Thanks. I have decided to not re-write the exam, even though I am still worried about my low GPA. But i am hoping that the reputation of my Engineering degree conferred from my University will help. It is the top University in Asia, and also top 10 globally.

As for the guides, I bought the GMATprep question pack and 4 additional exam CATs. But i only utilised 1 of the CATs, as I did not had enough time.
I bought the E-gmat verbal standalone package. I only went through the SC videos as I did not have time to complete the other videos. Going through the entire set of video is extremely time consuming, so make sure you have the time to commit before making the purchase.
The other CATs from Veritas Prep and Manhattan Prep were free.
That's all the resources i purchased online. I managed to get copies of the OG from a friend, so that was free for me.

Instead of spending the time selecting courses, you might be better off going with one you are comfortable with and start your practice immediately. As you start your journey, take note of your mistakes and learn from it - this is one thing the courses can never teach. You just have to figure it out yourself.

Have you scheduled your exam? I would say start with the section you like. It will boost your motivation because you are more likely to get questions right in the section that you like. Don't worry about the rest.. just yet.
I tried doing the opposite, personally, PS is harder than DS in quant so I focused on that but I got so frustrated everytime I didn't get the questions right.
I have less than 15 days till my test and I really suck at this. The thing is that there is much material and not enough time. That's why don't bother doing everything - cos you'll never finish it. Just start practicing questions and more practice tests!
I'm planning to do one test a day for 5 days before my real test. So that's 5 practice tests and it should be all good.
Goodluck to you.

Fully agree. If you lack practice, there will not be sufficient time. However I did notice on the actual test that I completed the Quant section 3mins before time..My analysis is that the Q questions on the actual test relied more on logic rather than mathematical manipulation to arrive at the final answer. Other than a logic test, GMAT is also a test of strategy. Time is your most precious resource during the test, strategize wisely and know which battles to fight, which to pass on.

Firstly, to give some background - I am a 3.28 GPA, Engineering undergraduate from Singapore.
Secondly, I took one month of leave from work to focus all my energy on studying. During this period, I worked 2-3hours daily from home, and I spent between 6-12hours studying each day. The total time I spent studying for GMAT was approximately 250-300hrs in the 25 days.
Thirdly, please take reference of my progress from below. The 2 GMATPrep tests were taken on 1 Jan and 11 Jan:

I just wanted to share a few tips on how I achieved the improvement:
1) I focused all my time and energy on attacking my weakness.
During the 25 days, I completed many rounds of mock tests, and from each test, I learnt about my weakness, and refined my strategy along the way. In all, I spent 70% of my time on SC foundation, 30% on mock tests(namely 1 Veritas Prep(620), 1 MGMAT CAT (550), 3 GMATPrep(2 scores as above, the other 670), 1 CAT from 800-score (660), and a ton of simulated tests 'created' from GMAT Question Bank)
For Quantitative, I knew I was strong in the concepts (I am an Engineer afterall), but I did not expect my Q-score to fare that badly in the first GMATPrep test. So quickly figured out that my weakness is that I am unable to complete each Q-question under 2 minutes. So for my last week of preparation, I gave myself 75mins each day to complete 37 questions of Medium & Difficult level questions from the GMAT Question Pack
I knew i was weak at Verbal - and indeed the results on my 1st GMATPrep convinced me that I was terrible at Verbal. After analysing the questions that were wrong, I singled out SC as the section that I needed to work on most. To do so, I started from scratch by learning all the Grammar rules that GMAT tests. I had the Manhattan SC guide, so I read through the book. But after taking a few more mock tests, I realised that my accuracy for SC section was not improving. As such, i changed my strategy. I worked through the OG questions, because I knew I can utilise GMATPrep Forum to find the explanations for each OG question. I also googled some of the OG questions and managed to find some e-GMAT videos that explained how to break the sentences into clauses and to analyze the errors. I liked e-GMAT's approach, hence I signed up for the Verbal course. I then used e-GMAT intensively for one week to practice the OG SC questions. Unfortunately I did not have sufficient time to complete all the OG SC questions, but my accuracy was averaging 60-70%, an improvement from 30%, by the time i got to my final week of preparation. At this point in time, I also realised that my accuracy for CR was not fantastic; I was achieving about 60-70% for CR. For RC, I was consistently getting 90-100% accuracy, however, I took way too long to comprehend each passage. But heck, I knew i had to move on to more important things - that is to do simulate one mock test every day for the last 7 days of preparation.

2) I practiced primarily from the GMAT Question Pack and GMATPrep Exam Pack for the last 1 week
I DID NOT complete OG because I find that the questions(especially Q) were too easy. Now looking back, I would benchmark the OG questions in the range of 500-650 level difficulty, and wished i spent lesser time on it. I instead practiced the questions that were pegged at the level of Medium or Difficult from the GMATPrep Question Bank. For the last 7 days, I simulated 7 mock tests daily, each of 37 Q-questions and 41 V-questions from the GMAT Question Bank. This strategy alone, improved my score to above 650 for the final mock tests I took.

Although I scored a 730(Q50, V38), I think i can further improve on my V-score if I had another 1 month to practice for CR and RC. However, my Verbal/Quantitative split is well balanced at 85%/87%, as such i am going to focus all my energy on b-school applications instead.

I hope that my posts will help those whom are struggling - do not blindly follow the study guides. Always take stock and assess the situation that you are at, refine, make changes and move forward!

All the best!

Really it is inspiring story!!! I wish to follow the method what you have stated.... It looks like an herculean task for me to cross 610 mark.. So taking more tests can actually improve one's score.. am I right??? till date I have attended only gmat prep tests...
These are some of my books and online coaching that I have and have enrolled myself.

Jamboree book1, book2, gmat quantitative book (2016 editon), gmat verbal book (2017 edition). Egmat verbal coaching.

though these above books and online coaching have improved my score , but not to much extent. Can you please suggest me how can I improve the methodology. my weakness in quants is data sufficiency questions pertaining to percentage, simple interest and compound interest and in Verbal in the order of weaknesses it is RC,CR and SC. In RC I either get all my questions right or all of them are wrong. can you please guide me bro!!

The point I am making is that there really isn't one approach that's the best. You need to understand your strength and weakness. Analyze how weaknesses can be improved, draw insights and derive a strategy that you are comfortable with.. What you have mentioned for DS is vague. For a percentage DS question, why is that a weakness? Is the question a percentage and sets question, whereby you need to draw a 2x2 table because you are not able to visualise what information is provided, what information is asked for? Why are interest questions your weakness? Drill deeper to understand why. Could it be because you are confused about the formulas of simple and compound interests? I am making suggestions based on my assumptions and imagination. I am not able to understand why these are your weakness..You need to do the hard work.

For CR, you mentioned a very interesting observation. You either get all the questions right, or all the questions wrong. Sounds like when you get all the questions right, you have a good understanding of the passage. And when you don't, perhaps could be that you do not have a good grasps of the passage. These are my hypothesis. You can review the questions, and see you can observe a pattern. Could it be that when you get all the questions wrong, the passages are a certain topic that you are not familiar with. If it is, how can this insight help you plan a strategy? You can either focus all your practice on similar passages, or decide that to forsake the questions when you encounter similar passages in the test. What is true for me is that I am not aiming for 800, my main objective is to complete all questions with accuracy. So choosing questions to forsake is definitely a strategy I will deploy.

that is a great score, congrats. My target is around 730, but my 7 mockups were between 650 and 710. I started with 650(after 1 week study) and my score fluctuated between 650 and 710 since then.

I had similar time(5 weeks) and now I have 10 days. I also have Q49 on average but very low accuracy on SC(%50), even though I studied for 3 weeks on SC. do you think that it worths to buy E-gmat SC in last 10 days? I have a good accuracy on CR (%85) but on RC I feel stressed if the topic is too technical. I think more practice will solve my RC problem. But on SC, I am a bit hopeless. Highest verbal score I was able to hit is V37. while V37 is a good score, I want to make sure that I will be able to hit 37 in the real exam. That is why I am asking about SC :)
