760 in GMAT but Poor/Average Quant Score 48

Question

Hello Experts!

I gave my GMAT yesterday and scored an overall score of 760 with 45 in verbal but only a 48 in Quant. This was my first attempt and I had scored Q49 and Q50 in my official mocks but had never scored more than Verbal 42. I was averaging around 730-740 overall in those mocks.

I want to know if my poor/average quant score will adversely impact my chances of admissions, in the top-5 programs, if I'm looking for a B-school with a finance focus? Do you think I should retake the exam?

Please do help. I took a month off from work and I have 2 weeks left and if i need to retake i need to book an appointment immediately.

I was curious if you wouldn't mind telling me a little bit about your verbal prep? I am a native speaker and I am hoping to score similarly in verbal? Any tips or tricks would be great!

Hi Michael!

I was really struggling with SC uptil a month back and I decided to go for the GMATPrep now course and I found it absolutely amazing! It really helped me clarify my mistakes considering I'm a non-native speaker. I would really recommend the course.

For RC I've seen on the forum as well as read in the Manhattan guides that it's essential to only make short notes. I personally found this strategy counter productive. The RC passages I've seen all include information presented vertically where there is detailed causation hidden. I realized that making detailed notes is key to understanding the undertones and hints of causation, which form the backbone of the questions.

It's a bit tough to say without knowing more about you. GMAT is important & a 760 is an awesome score. Yes, it would be ideal if you'd gotten a 49 or 50 quant score like you had on your practice tests, but a 48 is still a solid score. A lot will depend on the strength of your work experience & how much you've already proven your quant abilities there.

If this was your first test, there's no harm real harm in trying again - although it's not ideal to get a lower score the 2nd time, schools will genuinely consider your highest GMAT score.

Hey, can you also elaborate on how you prepared for Quants. What resources did you use and how many mock tests did you take before exam?

Great questions. I could share with you my personal experience, but it is very individualistic. Some people do two practice exams and go into the test. Others do them every other week for months on end.

The best GMAT practice tests are the unofficial practice ones put out by GMAC. Unfortunately, they are very limited in quantity. While not an official endorsement by any means, ManhattanGMAT has its own adaptive online tests that are supposedly pretty good.

If the GMAT is very important to you and you have the budget I strongly recommend taking a course to at least help you determine your relative strengths and weaknesses.
