A car covers a distance in 8 hours. Had the speed been increased by 4 kmph, the time taken would have reduced by 30 minutes. Find the distance.

Formula : distance = speed * time
D = S * t

Given
D = S*8. --> (1)

When speed increases by 4kmph, time decreases by 30 mins (or 0.5 hrs)
D = (S+4) (t-0.5) ---> (2)

Equating 1 and 2,

8S = (S+4) (t-0.5) = (S+4) (8-0.5)
= (S+4)*(7.5)
8S = 7.5S + 30
0.5S = 30
S = 60

Substituting For S in (1)
D= 8(S) = 8*60 = 480

Proportionality can be used since distance is constant

Speed(S) is inversely proportional to time(T)

Ratio of time is 480:450( in Minutes) = 48 :45 = 16:15

Ratio of Speed will be = 15:16

The difference between the ratio of speed is 1 unit which is equivalent to 4 kmph

Thus 15 parts will be equal to = 15*4 = 60 kmph

Distance = 60*8 =480 Kms (Ans)
