Very simple:
Total Share per person = 480/6 = 80;
Initial share per person(Downpayment) = 150/6 = 25;
Per Person share to be paid = 80 - 25 = 55;

Ans is (C).

Easy one but sometimes easy one create trouble if not read carefully.

Total Charter Cost=480
Each person cost=480/6=$80

Initial Down payment = 150
Each person Initial Down Payment=150/6=25
Remaining per person= 80-25=55
So answer is C.

Total Charter cost = 480$;
equal share of 6 people = 480/6 = 80$;

initial down payment = 150$;
shared by 6 people = 150/6 =25$;

So, still they owe 80 -25 = 55$;

A certain fishing boat is chartered by 6 people who are to contribute equally to the total charter cost of $480. If each person contributes equally to a $150 down payment, how much of the charter cost will each person still owe?

(A) $80
(B) $66
(C) $55
(D) $50
(E) $45

Since each of the 6 people has to contribute equally to the total charter cost of $480, each needs to contribute $480/6 = $80.

Since each of the 6 people contributes equally to a $150 down payment, each contributes $150/6 = $25 to the down payment.

Thus, each person still owes $80 - $25 = $55.

I know one can not doubt quality of OG questions, but does below sentence makes more sense?

Quote:
If each person contributes equally to a total of $150 down payment, how much of the charter cost will each person still owe?

I was confused if each contributed $150 or $150 was total down payment together by 6 persons.

Hi adkikani

Note the article used in the sentence "to a 150 down payment". this means only one down payment of 150 was made and each contributed to it.

Solution

Given:
    • A certain fishing boat is chartered by 6 people
    • Each person contribute equally to the total charter cost of $480.
    • Each person contributes equally to a $150 down payment

To find:
    • How much of the charter cost will each person still owe?

Approach and Working:
    • Cost of boat after paying the down payment = $480- $150 = $330
      o Hence, each person will still owe = \(\frac{$330}{6}\) =$55

Hence, the correct answer is option C.

(A) $80
(B) $66
(C) $55
(D) $50
(E) $45

$480/6 = $80. So, each of the 6 people must contribute $80 to the total charter cost.
$150/6 = $25. So, each of the 6 people contributes $25 to the $150 down payment.
Amount each person still owes $80 - $25 = $55.

Answer: C
