A. GMAT test taker does not have superb math skills, he or she will not score as much points as someone who does - Wrong - 'much' can't refer to countable points

B. GMAT test taker does not have superb math skills, he or she will not score as many points as someone who does have such skills - Second runners up. Correct parallelism. But "have such skills" at the end isn't necessary. D's a more succinct and elegant version.

C. person taking the GMAT does not have superb skills in math, he or she will not score as much points as someone who does - Wrong - 'much' can't refer to countable points

D. GMAT test taker does not have superb math skills, he or she will not score as many points as someone who does. - Correct

E. person taking the GMAT does not have superb math skills, he or she cannot score as much points as someone who does - Wrong - 'much' can't refer to countable points

why doesn't option D create an ambiguity issue .

Cant we interpret "he or she will not score as many points as someone who does" as "someone who does score" or as "someone who does have superb math skills"?

Ashwin12 I'll take a shot at your query. carcass and Bunuel, pls let me know in case I'm wrong.

Slightly simplified sentence:
A common misconception is that if a student does not have X, he or she will not score as high as someone who does.

Does refers back to X (i.e. superb math skills). 'Someone who does' is parallel with 'if a student does not'.
Plus logically, it is nonsensical to say - He or she will not score as high as someone who does score.
