Kudos will be awarded after the OE is posted. A council of ecologists in Hawaii
have concluded that much of the currently uncontrolled invasive species on the island chain were arriving in the holds of cargo ships.
A) have concluded that much of the currently uncontrolled invasive species on the island chain were arriving
B) has concluded that many of the currently uncontrolled invasive species on the island chain arrived
C) have concluded that many of the currently uncontrolled invasive species on the island chain had arrived
D) concluded that many of the currently uncontrolled invasive species on the island chain would arrive
E) has concluded that much of the currently uncontrolled invasive species on the island chain had arrived[/quote]
Meaning:
A council of ecologists has concluded something. What.? That many of the uncontrolled invasive species on the island chain arrived in the holds of cargo ships.
Subject-Verb Agreement:
Subject:
Council, not Ecologists why.? Ecologists are lying under the prepositional phrase 'of'.
So the Verb: should be
Has as council is singular.
So, A and C are out. With D would arrive changes the meaning of the sentence as now it states council concluded that invasive species would arrive(in future).
So, D is out.Left with B & E
There are two errors with E
1) Use of much for countable noun (species) many should be used
2) use of had arrived is wrong as there is only one event happening in that time frame. So a simple past will suffice.
E is outB is the right answer.
