I think I recognize this setup from an Official Guide question about the book "Little Women" (A recently-discovered manuscript...in the same year that "Little Women" was written...), and that one had a little bit more subject-verb agreement ("Little Women" as a book title is singular) and logical elements to it, so this one is probably produced independently by one of the websites...
What C does differently from A and B is it includes an event in the past tense to be parallel with "given", and to have something concrete that happened in that year, so C is correct, and that portion of the sentence accurately models that from the OG.

D and E have a modifier error, so they are out of race. Out of A, B and C, B is rejected as it uses appointment to, the correct usage is appointment as.
Now we are left with A and C, I think C put the thought more concisely and according to me A should read as "in the same year as of his appointment".
Thus OA is C
