My answer is (E). It took me 28 seconds.

I had some experience with light meter as a photographic tool. It must have been an essential tool prior to the advent of digital cameras. Nowadays digital cameras can do adequate job metering the light. As a result, a light meter is no longer a vital tool for the majority of professional photographers.

As (E) says, A light meter can accurately measure the amount of light in a defined space. The meter is most useful (and is still used) in the studios with professional lighting fixtures. It is indeed in a well defined space. (Defined: precisely marked or stated.)

For portraits, photographers need to measure lighting at different places to ensure desired results. Those places are well defined.

(A) in an accurate way = accurately. Use "accurately“ as it is more economical and formal.

(B) "accurate” is adjective and cannot modify verb.

(C) The amount of light, if already defined, does not need to be measured.

In the studios, photographer can actually control the lighting volume and proportion of different lighting sources (background lights, headlights, key lights, etc.)

(D) Its meaning is still not correct. The amount of light, if already accurate, does not need to be measured. (Unless, of course, we are testing / calibrating light meters.)

A light meter can measure in an accurate way the amount of light in a defined space and is a vital photographic tool.

Measure in an accurate way/ Accurately
Defined space/ defined amount of light

For conciseness adverb accurately is required
"defined " is an adjective used here to indicate location hence it should modify space

E is the only choice which uses both splits appropriately

A. measure in an accurate way the amount of light in a defined

B. accurate measure the amount of light in a defined

C. accurately measure the defined amount of light in a

D. measure the accurate amount of light defined in a

E. accurately measure the amount of light in a defined

E is the answer

The correct usage should be accurately measure instead of measure in accurate way - which is wordy. Hence eliminate
A and D

B. accurate measure the amount of light in a defined -- Accurate Measure of ____ is the construct not accurate measure the ____- hence this answer is erroneous.

C. accurately measure the defined amount of light in a -- No Meaning of the bold statement.

E. accurately measure the amount of light in a defined - Correct.

A light meter can measure in an accurate way the amount of light in a defined space and is a vital photographic tool.

A. measure in an accurate way the amount of light in a defined -> "in an accurate way" can be said as "accurately". Incorrect.

B. accurate measure the amount of light in a defined -> To modify verb "measure", we need adverb, not adjective Incorrect.

C. accurately measure the defined amount of light in a -> Meaning changed. Incorrect.

D. measure the accurate amount of light defined in a -> Same as B.

E. accurately measure the amount of light in a defined -> In a defined space is better.

So, I think E. :)

POE:
defined space vs defined light.
defined light is not making sense and changing meaning. Eliminate (C) & (D)
Eliminate (A)& (B) - accurately is more clear and simple

D. measure the accurate amount of light defined in a

I read the explanations here . I am still not sure how can we certainly say that the intended meaning of the sentence is "defined space" only and not "defined amount" ( i.e. choice C).

IMO, "defined(adjective)" can also be used to mention the limitation (or, to refer a minimal criteria).
https://www.dictionary.com/browse/defined

Can't we say the below sentence?
No test can accurately measure the skills defined to win a battle.

Can anyone explain please?

My doubt is
The light meter accurately "measure"

It should be "measures" ?
since the light meter is singular - needs singular verb

Dear Friends,

Here is a detailed explanation to this question-
Bunuel
A light meter can measure in an accurate way the amount of light in a defined space and is a vital photographic tool.

A. measure in an accurate way the amount of light in a defined

B. accurate measure the amount of light in a defined

C. accurately measure the defined amount of light in a

D. measure the accurate amount of light defined in a

E. accurately measure the amount of light in a defined

Meaning is crucial to solving this problem:
Understanding the intended meaning is key to solving this question; the intended core meaning of this sentence is that a light meter can accurately measure the amount of light in a defined space.

Concepts tested here: Meaning + Modifiers + Awkwardness/Redundancy

• An adjective can only modify a noun; it cannot modify another adjective; to modify an adjective, an adverb must be used; generally, adjective+ly leads to an adverb.

A: This answer choice uses the needlessly wordy phrase "in an accurate way", leading to awkwardness and redundancy.

B: This answer choice incorrectly uses the adjective "accurate" to modify the verb "measure"; please remember, an adjective can only modify a noun; it cannot modify another adjective; to modify an adjective, an adverb must be used; generally, adjective+ly leads to an adverb.

C: This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase "the defined amount of light in a"; the use of "defined" to modify "amount of light" rather than "space" incorrectly implies that a light meter can measure a specific amount of light that is defined in any space; the intended meaning is that a light meter can accurately measure any amount of light that is within a space that is defined.

D: This answer choice alters the meaning of the sentence through the phrase "the accurate amount of light defined"; the construction of this phrase illogically implies that a light meter can measure an amount of light that is accurate and that is defined in a general space; the intended meaning is that a light meter can accurately measure any amount of light that is within a space that is defined.

E: Correct. This answer choice correctly uses the adverb "accurately" to modify the verb "measure". Further, Option E uses the phrase "accurately measure the amount of light in a defined"; the use of "accurately" to modify "measure" and "defined" to measure "space" convey the intended meaning - that a light meter can accurately measure any amount of light in a space that is defined. Additionally, Option E is free of any awkwardness or redundancy.

Hence, E is the best answer choice.

All the best!
