A prolific architect who worked from the turn of the century until the late 1950’s, Julia Morgan designed nearly 800 buildings in California, perhaps most notably William Randolph Hearst’s monumental estate at San Simeon.

Took 15 seconds!

(A) Julia Morgan designed nearly 800 buildings in California, perhaps most notably William Randolph Hearst’s monumental estate at San Simeon - Correct: Starting phrase "A prolific architect" should modify "Julie Morgan".

(B) perhaps the most notable of the nearly 800 buildings in California designed by Julia Morgan was William Randolph Hearst’s monumental estate at San Simeon - Wrong: Modifier Issue

(C) of the nearly 800 buildings in California designed by Julia Morgan, perhaps the most notable was William Randolph Hearst’s monumental estate at San Simeon - Wrong: Modifier Issue

(D) nearly 800 buildings in California were designed by Julia Morgan, of which William Randolph Hearst’s monumental estate at San Simeon is perhaps the most notable - Wrong: Modifier Issue

(E) William Randolph Hearst’s monumental estate at San Simeon is perhaps the most notable of the nearly 800 buildings in California designed by Julia Morgan - Wrong: Modifier Issue

If you know your Modifiers well by now, this question shouldn’t take you long.

You see that it begins with the phrase A prolific architect who worked from the turn… and you know that it should modify Julia Morgan, the subject.

With this simple rule, you can eliminate Options B, C, D, and E.

Option A is the best option.

Hope this helps!

A prolific architect, an appositive correctly modifies Julia in A. In no other choice, there is a suitable noun that can modify the Architect. Hence A is the answer
Hi, can you pls help with the usage of "perhaps most notably William Randolph Hearst’s monumental estate at San Simeon". Per my understanding this is essentially modifying designed but the phrase is neither a v-ing modifier nor an absolute modifier, then come can it modify designed ?

It is an appositive modifier modifying the 800 buildings. It is not modifying the verb'designed'. Please try to recall all types of modifiers before you assign then names.

But the more important thing is that this doubt is unnecessary in the given topic since the correct answer has already been sealed with the first modifier. By looking into something unwarranted, one might get more confused and lose precious moments.

The non-underlined portion talks about a prolific architect. As per modifier touch rule, the phrase should be immediately followed by the noun it is supposed to modify. So, the option which starts with the name of the architect is the clear winner. Hence, A.

Thanks for the update, per my sense it is equally important to understand the various components of a sentence so as to be sure in your answer.
By the way for anyone who, like me, is looking for appositive modifier pls look here- https://magoosh.com/gmat/verbal/grammar ... e-phrases/
