Hi,

Since your work ex is on lower side, I would suggest you to gain some good amount of work ex, build your profile in next couple of years and prepare for your GMAT along with that also do some research on the targeted b-schools, attend info sessions, talk to the present students/ connect with alumni. It is always advised to prepare well before you apply.

Regards,
Neha Singh

Thanks a lot Ms. Singh

I was thinking my profile is too stereotype (some 300-400 Indians, every year, seems to have such profiles)

However, if I seem to have chances here are my details:

Expected work ex at matriculation: 3 years

Work ex: I'm a 2013 B.Tech passout, currently working in L&T ECC. Nothing much to say except that I was put in one of the most challenging projects staright away.

To add to it: I also had an opportunity to join ZS Associates. However it being a very niche firm (caters only to marketing - a small part of the whole management consulting and that too only in pharma sector) I thought it would not provide me the chance to enjoy my short term goal.

Short term goal: My short term post MBA goal is to work for a top consulting (can be read as BBM) firm in their gloabl office for 3-4 years and then in India for1-2 years. That would help me develop business acumen and garner much required experience for my long term goal

Long term goal: I have a b-plan (not yet fiancially evaluated, but the idea is pretty good for the Indain market) which I would like to implement in 10-12 years from now. If the idea gets outdated by then, I might have to think of a new one.

Thanks Again.

Just one more question. Since I dont have a strong financial background to get myself supported, what are the financial options one has for a top notch MBA program? I can certainly not afford to take INR 1.2 Crore as bank loan. So, could you just throw some light on this issue?

Definitely there are lot of options for financial aid that many top b-schools offer, as you have strong academics and decent profile you can plan to apply for need based/merit based scholarships and fellowships. Again its very competitive.

FYI – Admissions committees know the rankings of Indian undergraduate institutions and will realize now your NIT ranks.

If you are thinking of applying now with little experience have you considered LBS’ Masters in Management programme (English spelling)?

Also, the pure merit fellowships for Indian students at top MBA programs are quite limited. There are, though, many financial aid programs without U.S. co-signers you just need to check with the respective schools you are targeting. Some schools include: Stanford, HBS, Wharton, Sloan, Kellogg, Chicago, Fuqua, Darden, NYU, Tuck, Ross, Johnson, Yale, UNC-Flagler (but check on how current this is because schools change their programs).

Best of luck,

Thanks a lot Mr Cohan.

It was kind of you to respond to my query. I was kind of tensed as the world might not know NIT. Its good to know that "NIT" - the next to numero uno IIT - is not considered declasse.

Speaking of MiM, I want to garner a lot about industry before I do my MBA, as that would help my Long term goal (I had mentioned it. Don't know how to quote it here..very sorry for that). Without knowing what management is, I feel MBA is of not that a value. Moreover, I dont know whether my profile is like "ultracool" for a MiM degree.
To add to it, I've got a couple of very interesting things done at my job; 1 of them being standardizing a procedure which would be followed hereafter (doing it in 5-6 months of work-ex, I feel is...'good'). So, I wanna know how this sector and how business as a whole runs before jumping the boat.

A query to what you had said regarding finance. Merit/need based.....is it "VERY" difficult to get either of those scholarship? Even if the university sees a student not being able to join because of financial constraints?

Thanks again for you considering to reply to my post.

No worries on that. U.S. admissions committees realize that NIT is the next rung after IIT.

MBA schools award a combination of merit and need-based scholarships. So, lower-ranked schools will offer merit-based scholarships to certain candidates with high GMAT scores and other credentials to improve the quality of their student body. HBS offers need-based fellowships (https://www.hbs.edu/mba/financial-aid/Pages/hbs-fellowship-program.aspx) as does Kellogg (https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/programs/fulltimemba/tuition_financial_aid_scholarships/meritneedbased.aspx).

There are also certain scholarships, both school-specific and general that are for different ethnicities, sometimes different fields, etc. Those, you would need to discover through searching respective school and other websites. For example, here is Kellogg’s page (https://www.kellogg.northwestern.edu/programs/fulltimemba/tuition_financial_aid_scholarships/meritbased.aspx). You can see there are Donald P. Jacobs International Scholarships for international students.
So, to answer your question, in some instances international students can get scholarships, if from schools with large endowments (e.g. HBS) or from schools wishing to become more competitive.
Good luck,

Good luck,

Thanks a lot.

Firstly, very sorry for being a li'l late. Was on an official trip. Couldn't end up checking.

After doing some research, I feel the colleges suitbale for me would be : LBS, INSEAD, MIT Sloan ( and then Darden, Stanford (a long aim....), Booth, Haas). So, I badly want a LBS. I do not want to suit myself for other colleges, but would rather want a fit for my profile ( if possible).

Thanks again for " in some instances international students can get scholarships, if from schools with large endowments (e.g. HBS) or from schools wishing to become more competitive" answer. But, it seems a little tight noose. Hope all would go well.

Hope you wont mind myself getting in touch in case of any queries.

One more thing. Most schools have a fellowship page which shows which fellowships are available by what criteria (country or continent of origin being one of these). So, for example, INSEAD's fellowship page is here - https://mba.insead.edu/schlmgmt/. You can see Louis Vuitton offers a fellowship for Indian and Chinese students - https://mba.insead.edu/schlmgmt/dsp_schl_info.cfm?schlcode=ASIA%202.
