A -> depending on mass modifies the star's compression into a..., so it is better placed closer to star
C -> misplaced modifier
D -> Changes the intended meaning. It seems like "the mass" passed thru the red giant stage
E -> The same as above

I'll pick D.
A. It sounds like the passing through a red giant stage depends on mass.
B. Sounds as, depending on the red giant stage's mass.
C. it doesn't have a correct referent ie. star.
D. Sounds fine.
E. Sounds as if the mass is passing though the red giant stage.

D)

IMO B) is out because it is unclear what "depending on its mass" modifies. "star" or "a red gian stage". it should modify "star" !

(D) because 'after passing THE red-giant stage' sounds more appropriate.

In the other sentences, 'A red-giant stage' is being used, which, to me, does not sound correct.

"Mass determines whether a star", now mass cannot exist on it's own. ( is it the stars mass it is referring to)
Also, as it passes "the stage" , is it a particular stage we are referring to.

Although the second reason, is something i noticed on hindsight.

B is wrong. "its mass" means "a red giant stage's mass", this sounds completely wrong for me.

Not necessarily. For those of you who think "B" is wrong because the pronoun antecedes the noun it is supposed to refer check this post:

Bottomline: Pronoun can antecede the noun it is supposed to refer to.

For those of you who also think "B" is wrong because a "appositive" or relative clause or another prepositional phrase appears between the introductory modifier and the noun it is supposed to modify check this out:

Because B creates ambiguity in terms of pronoun reference, pick D. The link given by gmataquaguy does support the contention that a pronoun can antecede the noun but in that example, it was clear that "its" could not refer to:
1- animate object: analysts
2- plural form
Hence, "its" HAD to refer to "THE proposal"

Because of this ambiguity, in which "its" could very well refer to "red giant stage", eliminate B

- 'it' does not have clear precedent. Would naturally stick to black hole. A is out.

(B) After passing through a red giant stage, depending on its mass, a star will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.
- suggest mass comes from the red giant stage

(C) After passing through a red giant stage, a starâ€™s mass will determine if it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.
- out. suggest red giant stage is compressing itself into a star

(D) Mass determines whether a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

(E) The mass of a star, after passing through the red giant stage, will determine whether it compresses itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.
- out. suggests mass is passing through red giant stage

hmm, seems like i am improving my SC. I can now reconstruct ETS' crazy options to determine the best choice rather than read the options first before i choose my ans.

Anyway, I got the OA to this. It's (D).
My Source: 885 GMAT questions

After passing through a red giant stage, a star, depending on its mass, will compress itself into a white dwarf, a neutron star, or a black hole.

...then we would have had two correct sentences.

IMO, the modifying clause (or whatever it's called), 'depending on its mass' is not appropriately placed in (B). Paul, Mr Cat , what do you guys think?

Since the discussion is between B&D...will compare the two...
In B...its not clear whether the phenomenon is dependent on the red giant's mass or the star's mass...

Obviously, we would then have had 2 possible answers. In your example, the appositive is placed right after "star" and it is clear that "its" would then refer to the right noun.
